Biography[edit]

Battle for Zeta Halo[edit]

Main article: Battle for Zeta Halo

On December 12, 2559, Gainey was aboard the UNSC Infinity when it was ambushed by Banished forces upon arrival at Installation 07. Alongside Hightower, he survived the landing and the next six months on the ring, but the two lost the rest of their squad.[1] Under the leadership of Commander Wes Thompson, Gainey and Hightower were a part of a large group -- a mixture of military, support, science and civilian -- of survivors on the stable part of the ring who spent weeks on the move together, losing too many people to count. Eventually, in around early May, they found Lifeworker Central where the Forerunner Dazzlers protected the remaining fifty-two people from Banished detection where Gainey and Hightower took part in the operations to find resources and survivors and the guerilla warfare conducted against Banished scouting parties.[3] Due to the Banished stealing the dog tags of dead soldiers and using them to lay ambushes, Gainey, Hightower and the other military personnel deactivated theirs and left them with Thompson.[1] While Gainey and Hightower saw a lot of Spartans during the first day and a half of fighting, after the explosion and the months of fighting, they hadn't seen any for a long time.[3]

On June 2, Gainey and Hightower were nearly done with guard duty near Lifeworker Central and watching repeats of baking videos and dog grooming infomercials that Gainey kept on his holopad as a keepsake when John-117 came upon them. Their lack of dog tags caused the Spartan to at first suspect them to be Banished humans, but upon seeing what they were doing, he identified them as friendlies. The two ODSTs were shocked to see the legendary Spartan, leading to a brief standoff. The Master Chief explained that he was looking for Lifeworker Central. The two explained that the UNSC had access to the exterior of the site and a few annexes, but no one had been able to get the main control console to work to open up the bulk of the structure. Joyeuse revealed herself, alarming the two ODSTs due to her resemblence to Cortana. However, Gainey and Hightower agreed to take the Spartan's word that Joy was on their side rather than the Created's.[1]

After the Master Chief retrieved Fernando Esparza and Lucas Browning, Gainey and Hightower led him to their camp, filling the Spartan in on their experiences. The Master Chief requested to be taken to the field hospital first and for them to see about arranging for a mechanic to look at Echo 216.[3] At the field hospital, the Master Chief left Esparza and Browning to be treated before Gainey and Hightower escorted him to Thompson at the command center. Thompson assigned the two ODSTs to help the Spartan with anything that he needed.[4] The two were shocked to discover that Genie Hightower and her team weren't human, having been archived by the Forerunner technology as digital essences.[5]

Shortly after, Lieutenant Cardenas arrived with the news that the Banished were gathering in larger numbers than anything the camp had seen along the jungle perimeter. As a part of Combat Team Zulu, Gainey and Hightower were assigned to help the Master Chief, Joy, Browning and Esparza to return to their Pelican, forming a perimeter around the four with Combat Team Whiskey. After Hightower, at the front of the group, noticed the tracks of at least five Kig-Yar, the Master Chief had Whiskey split off to lead away the Banished patrol while his group and Zulu went changed direction to reach the dropship the long way around while explosives were detonated in the jungle by three other combat teams to draw the Banished away from Lifeworker Central. As they neared Echo 216, the Master Chief detected four enemies nearby. Gainey, Hightower and the rest of Zulu departed to take them out silently.[2]

On June 8, Gainey and Hightower attended Browning's funeral alongside a number of others, including the other members of the combat teams, Master Chief, Joy, Esparza, Thompson, Janina Yu, Cardenas, the boat crew and four Swords of Sanghelios warriors.[6]

On June 12, Gainey and Hightower were amongst the crowd that gathered as Genie revealed that while she and her team were unable to find the Infinity, they had found large groups of other survivors scattered across Zeta Halo. The two were amongst the first to volunteer themselves to the Spartan for a search and rescue mission for the other survivors.[7]
