Commander Wes Thompson is a Commander in the UNSC Navy during the Battle for Zeta Halo.[1]
Biography[edit]
Battle for Zeta Halo[edit]
On December 12, 2559, Thompson was aboard the UNSC Infinity when it was ambushed by Banished forces upon arrival at Installation 07. He was amongst those who survived the landing and the next six months on the ring. Under the leadership of Thompson, a large group -- a mixture of military, support, science and civilian -- of survivors on the stable part of the ring who spent weeks on the move together, losing too many people to count. Eventually, in around early May, they found Lifeworker Central where the Forerunner Dazzlers protected the remaining fifty-two people from Banished detection. All soldiers and able-bodied civilians went out on rotation every week. Teams searched for survivors and left behind encrypted messages and broadcasts for others; scavenger teams looked for food, supplies, equipment, and weapons. The more experienced personnel rotated between reconnaissance and guard duty while engaging in guerilla warfare, having taken out several Banished scouting parties. The camp's main focus was on rebuilding their arsenal, fixing their comms suite, and recovering other survivors.[3] They were able to salvage nearly all of a working medical bay from a downed Mulsanne-class light frigate, which was rebuilt into a field hospital staffed by field surgeon Dr. Shoff and combat medic Janina Yu.[1] However, there were no Spartans in the group.[3] Since the Banished used dead soldiers' dog tags to lay ambushes, the military personnel deactivated and removed their dog tags, leaving them at the camp with Thompson.[4]
On June 6, John-117, Joyeuse, Fernando Esparza and Lucas Browning sought Lifeworker Central in the hopes of using the geas technology located there to remove the imprint placed in Browning's mind by the Harbinger and perhaps decode whatever was in it.[5][6] After taking Browning and Esparza to the field hospital to be treated by Dr. Shoff, the Master Chief was escorted to Thompson by Gainey and Hightower. Thompson revealed that the encampment had been unable to access the complex's control room, not even the scientists from the Zeta Halo Project who had already been there when Thompson's forces arrived. Realizing that he was there to access Lifeworker Central, Thompson promised the Master Chief whatever support he needed and assigned Gainey and Hightower to help. Thompson looked forward to getting the first decent sitrep in weeks from the legendary Spartan which Thompson suspected was going to make him feel a whole lot better about Zeta Halo.[1]
Later, Lieutenant Cardenas arrived with the news that the Banished were gathering in larger numbers than anything the camp had seen along the jungle perimeter. She led the Master Chief to the ops center where everyone was shocked to see that Joy was identical to Cortana. The AI asked everyone to judge her by her own actions rather than Cortana's and to give Joy a chance to prove herself. Joy warned Thompson that the biggest issue was a ground assault accidentally coming through the distortion protecting the encampment and exposing their position to the Banished. Although the Master Chief offered to draw them off, Thompson instead assigned Cardenas and five combat teams to use explosives planted throughout the jungle to draw the Banished off. Aware that the Spartan was up to something important, Thompson intended to keep the Banished off of him so that the Master Chief could accomplish his mission which the Spartan was grateful for.[7]
On June 8, Thompson was amongst the attendees at Browning's funeral alongside the Master Chief, Joy, Esparza, Shoff, Janina, Cardenas, Gainey, Hightower, four Swords of Sanghelios warriors and the surviving members of the boat crew.[8]
On June 12, Thompson and Dr. Genie Dawson revealed to the Master Chief, Joy, Spartan Nina Kovan and a large crowd made up of some of the toughest and most effective marines in the retinue that the scientists had found large groups of other UNSC survivors scattered across the ring, bringing renewed hope and excitement to everyone. Many amongst the crowd eagerly volunteered themselves to the Spartan for a search and rescue mission for the other survivors.[9]
