The Covenant has a history spanning thousands of years, where time was measured using a measurement system under their Battle Calendar. Significant periods of time in Covenant history were divided and categorized based on a system of ages, which were assigned into seven categories based on notable events within each.[1]

The Covenant have seven ages that form the progression of the Covenant history: Abandonment, Conflict, Reconciliation, Discovery, Conversion, Doubt, and Reclamation. While they happened in order initially,[2] following this ages may not run sequentially, and are broad overall themes of the period the Covenant are in,[1] and are often determined by the ambitions of the ruling Hierarchs at the time.[3] For example the twenty-third Age of Doubt was followed directly into the ninth Age of Reclamation.[4] Each age was broken up into cycles, units, and centals based around High Charity time.[1]

The Ages

Ages of Abandonment

The first age to occur in their initial progression, ages under Abandonment are associated with "ignorance and fear",[3] according to the Progression of the Ages ceremony it is represented by obsidian.[2] The initial Age of Abandonment referred to the period the Forerunners activated the Halo Array and disappearing from the galaxy.[5][6]

Ages of Conflict

The second age to occur in their initial progression, ages under Conflict are associated with "rivalry and bloodshed",[3] according to the Progression of the Ages ceremony it is represented by iron.[2] Typically they are related to when the Covenant have power struggles such as the Unggoy Rebellion during the Thirty Ninth Age of Doubt.[7]

Ages of Reconciliation

The third age to occur in their initial progression, ages under Reconciliation are associated with "humility and brotherhood",[3] according to the Progression of the Ages ceremony it is represented by polished jade.[2] The initial Age of Reconciliation was tied to the signing of the Writ of Union between the Sangheili and San'Shyuum, a peace treaty that formed the basis of the Covenant.[8]

Ages of Discovery

The fourth age to occur in their initial progression, ages under Discovery are associated with "wonder and understanding",[3] according to the Progression of the Ages ceremony it is represented by geodes.[2] Ages of Discovery are typically associated with eras of exploration, with several ships mass-assembled during them such as the Ceudar-pattern heavy corvette being mass produced during the twentieth age of Discovery.[9] Ages of Discovery are also tied to an understanding the Forereunners left clues for the Covenant to follow.[10]

Ages of Conversion

The fifth age to occur in their initial progression, ages under Conversion are associated with "obedience and freedom".[3][2] Ages of Conversion are typically when new races such as the Unggoy, and Lekgolo are incorporated into the Covenant.[11][12]

Ages of Doubt

The sixth age to occur in their initial progression, ages under Doubt are associated with "faith and patience",[3] according to the Progression of the Ages ceremony it is represented by black opal.[2] Ages of Doubt are typically periods when no great discoveries were made and the Covenant struggled with conflict related to it.[11][12]

Ages of Reclamation

The seventh age to occur in their initial progression, ages under Reclamation are associated with "journey and salvation",[3] according to the Progression of the Ages ceremony it is represented by Forerunner alloy.[2] Ages of Reclamation are typically periods when Forerunner artifacts are discovered, with the Covenant experiencing great change and religious fervor.[11][12]
