The '''Electronic Entertainment Expo''', commonly known as '''E3''', is an annual trade show for the computer and video games industry presented by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). It is used by many video game developers to show off their upcoming games and game-related hardware.
The''' Electronic Entertainment Expo''' or '''E3''', more commonly known as '''E3''', is an annual trade show for the computer and video games industry presented by the Entertainment Software Association. It is only open to game industry professionals, journalists, and guests of exhibitors, such as celebrities. As of 2007, E3 will be invitation-only, meaning that instead of around 60,000 people at E3 there will only be 5,000. The reason for this change is to allow for a more intimate atmosphere where business will be emphasized.

E3 was previously held in the third week of May of each year at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) in Los Angeles. In 2007, the show will be held in Santa Monica, California from July 11 to July 13. The Expo was held in Atlanta for two years during the late 1990s, during which attendance plummeted. The ESA said that over 70,000 people attended the show in 2005.
== Overview ==
E3 is widely considered to be the ultimate expo in the video game industry. Former attendees compare the feeling of attending E3 to a kid in a candy store, and many video game critics, including Gamespot, G4, IGN, and Game Informer Magazine routinely document the annual event and sometimes even provide a series of E3 awards.

Many video game developers show off their upcoming games and game-related hardware at the event, The independent "Game Critics Awards" have been given to "Best of E³" games in various categories since 1998.
E3 was invitation-only in 2007 and 2008, reducing the number of attendees from 60,000 at E3 2006. A separate conference called the Entertainment for All Expo was created to accommodate the public demand for a major, annual video game event; however, it has not been able to replicate E3's success.

The Game Developers Conference is another yearly milestone for developers held in the spring each year in San Jose or San Francisco, California, and generally billed as an educational conference for game developers, while E3 is primarily a showcase, aimed at the press and retailers.
E3 was previously held in the third week of May of each year at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) in Los Angeles. In 2007, the convention was exceptionally held from July 11 to July 13 in Santa Monica, California. In 2009, the convention started June 1 and ended June 4 in Los Angeles. The ESA stated that the event reached a record attendance of 70,000 people in 2005. In 2009, the attendance reached 41,000, an increase of 820% on the previous year's E3's attendance. Since 2009, all E3 conventions took place in either the first or the second week of June and over the course of two days. In 2013, ESA  announced that the LACC would host E3 for three more years. In early [[2020]], E3 was suspended due to fears over the spread of the [[Wikipedia:Coronavirus disease 2019|COVID-19]] virus,<ref>[https://twitter.com/E3/status/1237769050123534336?s=19 ''E3 on Twitter'']</ref> with Phil Spencer announcing that the Microsoft conference will instead be replaced by an Xbox digital event.<ref>[https://twitter.com/XboxP3/status/1237768900244156417?s=19 ''Phil Spencer on Twitter'']</ref> E3 would again return in 2021, rebranded as the Electronic Entertainment Experience as it is an all-digital event.

On July 31, 2006, it was announced that the expo would be downsized and restructured and on October 13, 2006 the new format of the show was detailed. Essentially, the E³ "Trade Show" was replaced with a much lower-key and inaccessible event or series of events known as the E3 Media and Business Summit. It will focus on press events and small meetings with media, retail, development, and other key sectors. While there will be opportunities for game demonstrations, E³ 2007 will not feature the large trade show environment of previous years.<ref>http://www.theesa.com/archives/2006/07/for_immediate_r.php</ref>
E3 is widely regarded as the world's largest regular convention for video games. Video game companies generally spend more on their presentations for E3 than any other convention (including fancy decorations and pyrotechnics). Major video game critics often have a "best of E3" award session (similar to end-of-year award sessions), and only E3 consistently features such awards (for example, there is rarely a "Best of TGS" award session).

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, commonly known as E3, is an annual trade show for the computer and video games industry presented by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). It is used by many video game developers to show off their upcoming games and game-related hardware.

Overview[edit]

E3 is widely considered to be the ultimate expo in the video game industry. Former attendees compare the feeling of attending E3 to a kid in a candy store, and many video game critics, including Gamespot, G4, IGN, and Game Informer Magazine routinely document the annual event and sometimes even provide a series of E3 awards.

E3 was invitation-only in 2007 and 2008, reducing the number of attendees from 60,000 at E3 2006. A separate conference called the Entertainment for All Expo was created to accommodate the public demand for a major, annual video game event; however, it has not been able to replicate E3's success.

In early 2020, E3 was suspended due to fears over the spread of the COVID-19 virus,[1] with Phil Spencer announcing that the Microsoft conference will instead be replaced by an Xbox digital event.[2] E3 would again return in 2021, rebranded as the Electronic Entertainment Experience as it is an all-digital event.
