The DMR is a human utility weapon featured in Halo 5: Guardians.

Universe and lore[edit]

Main article: M395B DMR

The DMR featured in Halo 5: Guardians is the M395B DMR, a 7.62x51mm rifle that is a standard service firearm in the United Nations Space Command. It is the replacement to the M395 DMR that was previously featured in Halo 4.

Campaign[edit]

In the campaign of Halo 5: Guardians, the DMR is the default primary weapon for players playing as Fred (Blue Team missions) or Tanaka (Fireteam Osiris missions). A notable exception is the first mission of the game, where Tanaka replaces her usual DMR with an Assault Rifle. Unlike in Halo 4, the DMR is introduced relatively early in the game, with its first appearance being in the mission Blue Team, where it can be found in the assembly bay of Argent Moon or given to the player at the start of the level if they are playing as Fred. The DMR can also be seen in the hands of the Liang-Dortmund mining security forces in the missions set on Meridian (Glassed, Unconfirmed, and Evacuation), who use the weapon to fight the Prometheans.

As with any precision weapon, the DMR is capable of immediately eliminating unshielded targets with a headshot, and its single-shot nature acts as a buff to its ammo economy compared to the Battle Rifle, allowing it to kill more enemies while also using up less ammo. The DMR has been subject to several changes throughout the years, initially having a high rate of fire before being adjusted to be closer to the Halo 4 iteration of the weapon; these changes also apply to the campaign.

Multiplayer and Warzone[edit]

The DMR is not commonly featured as a starting weapon in the multiplayer component of Halo 5: Guardians; usually, it is featured in certain variants of the SWAT game type. It also spawns on some maps, such as Empire. It has a similar damage output to the Magnum, both of them scoring a Perfect Kill on a full-shield, full-health Spartan in five hits, with the fifth hit being a headshot. However, the DMR does slightly more damage and is overall more effective at longer ranges.

In Warzone, the DMR is a Rare (previously Ultra Rare) loadout weapon REQ that can be used when the player has 6 energy or more. Being a loadout weapon, acquiring the DMR or any of its variants does not exhaust the player's REQ energy.

The DMR also has a commendation for players to progress through in multiplayer, featuring five tiers that require a cumulative 420 kills (10 + 30 + 60 + 110 + 210) to complete. Completing each tier awards XP, with the third and fifth tiers awarding a Commendation Reward Pack and a DMR Pack, respectively.

Changes[edit]

Changes from Halo 5: Guardians to HCS testing[edit]

  • Aim assist properties have been changed, with shorter range engagements losing it.
  • Fire rate has been slowed down, putting the DMR back to a state closer to Halo 4's M395 at 175 RPM.
