The Highland Mountains are a large group of mountain ranges in the Viery Territory of the human colony and UNSC fortress world Reach, located on Reach's northernmost continent.[1][2] The Highland Mountains were home to many facilities used by the UNSC, including Reach High Command, the Reach FLEETCOM Military Complex, Military Reservation 01478-B, Camp Hathcock, Camp Independence, Fairchild Field and ONI's CASTLE Base under Menachite Mountain. Other areas of the Highland Mountains include the Military Wilderness Training Preserve where Longhorn Valley, ODG Facility A-331 and the Big Horn River were located. Wild blueberry bushes and cedar trees grew in the mountains.[3]
After the Fall of Reach on August 30, 2552, these mountains were the only area not glassed by the Covenant, though glassing did occur in the area on a small scale.[4] The Covenant concentrated their forces in the region and set up an extensive excavation operation around Menachite Mountain in order to uncover a massive subterranean Forerunner structure.[5]
