Trials of Atriox
From Halopedia, the Halo wiki
- "Awaken, valiant warriors! Ah, there you are. I am Escharum, War Chief of the Banished. I welcome you to the House of Reckoning. Within these iron halls, through the Trials of Atriox, all shall know what it is to be Banished -- our living history, how we once served the Covenant. All shall know what it is to be meat. The trial is King of the Hill. One side holds the advantage of territory and must hold it while forty Banished brothers are sent to stake their claim. Survive, and you shall be granted a boon. You have played your little War Games long enough. Now, you will play mine. It is the same prize that Atriox received for surviving the countless battles that claimed his brothers. A new day shall dawn over the House of Reckoning. You shall be fed and watered, and tomorrow... you will fight again. Take heart, human. With every moment you stand and fight, you shall know Atriox. You shall know the Banished. You shall know the Jiralhanae way of immolation. Fight hard. Die well."
- — Escharum's speech[1]
The Trials of Atriox was a ritual devised by War Chief Escharum where human captives were pitted against Banished forces in the House of Reckoning's arenas.[1]
History[edit]
During the Battle for Zeta Halo, many captured humans were transported to Escharum's base, the House of Reckoning, where they went through the Trials of Atriox: a ritual in which they defend a large room from multiple waves of Banished troops. If they survived, they were fed food and water, then went through the trial again on the next day. On February 3, 2560, following the Battle of the Mortal Reverie, this included Gunnery Sergeant Elena Bobrov, Spartan, Terry Hedge, Lance Corporal Singh Swords of Sanghelios healer "Doc."[1] However, while many humans fought in the arenas, none survived.[2]
In late May 2560, the Master Chief attacked the House of Reckoning to rescue Fernando Esparza. Escharum initiated the Trials of Atriox for the legendary Spartan, sending multiple waves of Unggoy, Kig-Yar, Sangheili and Jiralhanae to attack him en masse. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Master Chief was able to slay the Banished forces with scavenged UNSC weapons and proceed to the next level of the House of Reckoning.
On the second level, the Master Chief was taunted by another holographic message from Escharum and entered yet another arena where he faced more waves of Banished troops. This time, the troops included a Hunter pair, but the Spartan succeeded in eliminating them and ascending to the third level where Escharum taunted him about the defeat of the UNSC Infinity.
On the third level, the Master Chief was drawn by voices into the single structure in the middle of the arena. Upon the Master Chief's discovery that it was Esparza's holorecorder, he was trapped by security barriers and attacked by a cloaked Jega 'Rdomnai. Aided by Spartan Hudson Griffin's Threat Sensor, the Master Chief managed to defeat the sadistic Blademaster and continue on to the top level where the Master Chief fought and killed Escharum himself in single combat.[2]
'Rdomnai would survive his fight with the Master Chief due to his internal cybernetics.[3]
