Operation: SONATA was a military intelligence operation conducted by the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) on September 22, 2559. The operation involved the deployment of a single UNSC Office of Naval Intelligence recon officer to the city of New Tyne on Venezia to investigate the emerging threat of Janissary supersoldiers being created by non-UNSC actors. The operation was ultimately successful for the UNSC, allowing them to learn of the emerging supersoldier threat without taking any casualties.[1]
Background[edit]
The colony world of Venezia was settled in in 2450, though quickly grew into a colonial mindset that was in active opposition to that of the Unified Earth Government (UEG). After the end of the Human-Covenant War in 2552, the world became a hub for ex-Covenant species to peacefully integrate with the human population there, the peace mediated by a shared distaste for the UEG and UNSC.[1] The effectively lawless nature of the colony allowed for the emergence of organised crime including black market arms trading, piracy, slavery. This relative peace meant that the world was relatively unaffected by the Created uprising, as the Created focused their resources elsewhere. Throughout the first half of 2559 this environment made Venezia's organised criminal organisations more daring, believing they would be able to act without pushback from the UNSC - who were more distracted with the issue of the Created.[1]
It was this environment which allowed one of Venezia's powerbrokers, a Yonhet named M'raad, to begin a supersoldier program akin to the UNSC's own SPARTAN-II program. Similar to the Spartans, M'raad focused on abducting children from Venezia to be put through a cycle of intense training and augmentations, and eventually given power armour.[1] This program, alongside a number of similar private supersoldier ventures springing up across the Human Sphere, was collectively given the name "Janissary" by ONI.[3] Unlike the Spartans, however, M'raad's Janissaries were primarily abducted from the families of those who were unable to repay his debts, with the idea being that they would work for M'raad to pay off their parents' debts.[1] The catch, however, was that Janissaries were also expected to pay for their own equipment - if they wanted to get better weapons and armour to be more successful in the field, they would be placed further into M'raad's debt.[2]
M'raad's venture was first made known to the UNSC some time in September 2559, when a Sangheili informant Zef 'Trahl (operating under the codename MONEYBAGS) contacted Captain Veronica Dare of ONI Section One. He noted that M'raad's venture was operating out of an under-construction skyscraper in New Tyne, and that this made a window to infiltrate the tower a very limited-time event. As such, he persuaded Captain Dare to deploy to the tower, as it would not interfere with the UNSC's plans for the then-upcoming mission to Reach.[1]
