Operation: HOURGLASS was a military operation undertaken by the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) during the Created conflict.[1] The mission was conducted in late 2559 shortly before Operation: WOLFE, which itself took place between October 7-12,[Note 1] and involved an Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) intelligence delivery to John-117. The mission also involved field-testing for the Spartan's then-new GEN3 MJOLNIR armour,[2] which he had acquired from Perihelion Station on September 21.[3][4]
The operation[edit]
In late September or early October of 2559[Note 1], the prowler UNSC Down Out and Go was ordered by the Office of Naval Intelligence to deliver an encryption key to John-117 behind enemy lines. Due to the need for information compartmentalisation from the Created, as per the Cole Protocol, ONI chose their agent Lieutenant Parisa for the task due to the agent's unique form of memory loss - which caused Parisa to have near-perfect recollection for around seven hours before proceeding to forget nearly everything she'd learnt during that time. To deliver the encryption key, Parisa was to use a courier shuttle to depart from the prowler, before the Down Out and Go jumped away via slipspace. The shuttle was equipped with a single M6D magnum for Parisa's defence.[1]
To pass the time during the flight to the rendezvous with the Master Chief, Paris ultimately elected to begin looking up background information on the Spartan, finding 6,841 interviews on-file from people who had seen the Spartan in person. Interviews listened to by Parisa included Faith Abdi[5] and Captain Carol "Foehammer" Rawley.[6] Eventually, the shuttle's aft stabiliser suffered a fault and began to leak trihydridehexazine gas, which ultimately caught the attention of a Created Phaeton squadron. As such, Parisa elected to try and disguise the ship as space debris caught in the gravitational pull of a gas giant 0.6AU away. While she was successful, this also resulted in the shuttle beginning to burn up in the gas giant's atmosphere.[6] After recovering from nearly falling into the gas giant, Parisa listened to the Master Chief testimonies of Corporal Chips Dubbo and Sergeant Franklin Mendez. After listening to the Mendez interview, she began to question how long she had been working for ONI: upon learning from Oliver that she began working for them in 2557, she questioned how she had only been tasked on five missions. Growing frustrated at Oliver's lack of help in the matter, she decided to abort the mission and turn the shuttle around.[7] However, this was short-lived upon learning that the time taken to head back to UNSC-controlled space would be approximately the same as the time needed to complete the mission anyway. Additionally, the ship's narrow escape from falling into the gas giant had now re-caught the attention of the Phaetons.[8]
At this time, John-117 allowed his D77 Pelican - now at the preassigned rendezvous point - to broadcast its position. He then proceeded to dock with Parisa's ship and board it.[8] When the Phaetons got close, the Spartan directed Oliver to perform evasive manouevres, eventually blowing one of the ship's thrusters to disable one of the enemy ships. The Created then teleported several Armigers aboard the ship, which were dispatched by the Spartan.[2]
Throughout the stress of the mission, Parisa slowly began to recollect memories of her childhood on Eridanus II,[5] which culminated in her encoding the data from her brain in a knock code. When her memory eventually reset towards the mission's end, the encoded message was able to be read by Master Chief, who promptly logged the mission, and his armour's testing, as a success. Parisa then recieved a new mission from her handler Codename: FIXER, which she promptly accepted.[2]

Notes[edit]
- ^ a b c In Canon Fodder 122, Memory Agent is stated as occurring shortly prior to the events of the novel Halo: Shadows of Reach, which takes place October 7–12, 2559. In Halo: From the Soil to the Stars and Canon Fodder 162, Blue Team are confirmed as having recieved their GEN3 MJOLNIR on September 21, 2559. As such, the events depicted in Memory Agent must take place some time between September 21 and October 7.
