Private Kappus was an enlisted serviceman in the UNSC Marine Corps. Serving as as a tech specialist, he was attached to the UNSC Pillar of Autumn in September 2552 and participated in the Battle of Installation 04.[1]
Biography[edit]
Battle of Installation 04[edit]
Kappus was one of the Marines stationed on the UNSC Pillar of Autumn when the ship escaped from the Fall of Reach on August 30, 2552. On September 19, he was listed as a member of Marine Security Detail A on Alpha Shift on Pillar of Autumn's duty roster alongside Wallace Jenkins and Bisenti.[2] When the ship arrived at Installation 04 on September 19, it was attacked by the Covenant, marking the beginning of the Battle of Installation 04.[3] Having survived when UNSC forces made landfall on the ring, Kappus was part of the UNSC team led by Captain Jacob Keyes and Sergeant Major Avery Johnson, to secure a supposed Covenant weapons cache that a captured Sangheili, 'Qualomee, had disclosed to them during an interrogation.[1] Unbeknownst to the UNSC forces, the "cache" was actually a Flood containment facility. As a tech specialist, one of Kappus' tasks was opening locked doors with a spoofer. He was ordered by Captain Keyes to open the door into the chamber holding the Flood. Unwillingly and unknowingly, Kappus unleashed the Flood, dooming him and the rest of his squad, save for Johnson. When Riley was attacked by a pod infector, Kappus successfully managed to pull it off, but Riley was killed by the creature.[1][Note 1]
The Flood-infected Private Kappus was likely killed by John-117 during the latter's escape from the installation, by the UNSC or Covenant forces, or when the Chief destroyed Halo.[4]
Production notes[edit]
Kappus first appears in Halo: The Flood, which introduces discrepancies to the series of events at the Flood containment facility, as he replaces Manuel Mendoza and Bisenti in certain events as originally depicted in Jenkins' helmet recording in Halo: Combat Evolved. Particularly, Kappus replaces Mendoza as the one who uses a spoofer to unlock the door into the chamber holding the Flood pod infectors; he also says Mendoza's line "Sarge! Listen..." moments before they were attacked by the Flood. Kappus then replaces Bisenti as the one who attempts to pull a Flood pod infector away from Riley. Kappus' role appears to be reinforced in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, which depicts a different marine — likely Kappus, with a unique character model that lacks Mendoza's distinct boonie hat — that points out the dead Sangheili's open chest cavity and unlocks the chamber's door using a spoofer; though, Kappus is no longer on-screen after the marines enter the chamber, with Bisenti once again being the one who tries to save Riley. Kappus' appearance is seemingly omitted in Halo: Campaign Evolved, which faithfully recreates the series of events in Halo: Combat Evolved and once again depicts Mendoza as the one who investigates the dead Sangheili and uses the spoofer to open the door. That being said, Kappus remains a canonical character, as confirmed by the duty roster found on the Autumn.[2]
