Biography[edit]

Human-Covenant War[edit]

Lieutenant Cassidy was a part of Spirit of Fire's complement by the time the vessel departed the Battle for Arcadia in February 2531. While his actions in the ensuing battle of Trove are unclear, he survived the shield world's destruction at the end of that conflict and was consequently placed into cryo stasis as the ship slowly attempted to fly back to human space at sublight speeds.

Second Ark Conflict[edit]

Main article: Second Ark Conflict

Cassidy, along with the rest of Spirit of Fire, awoke in early 2559 to find that the ship had been transported to the Ark, outside of the galaxy. The ship soon found itself in conflict with a garrison of Banished on the megastructure, committing the ship and its crew to a long war over the ensuing months. During the Second Ark Conflict Cassidy served as the relief pilot for a D77/r Pelican, Romeo 008, alongside Commander Barre and Ensigns Hanson, Mahajan, and Ngonga.[1]

On October 12, 2559, Cassidy and his Pelican were a part of the forces committed to Spirit of Fire's massed offensive against Banished lines defending Translocation Portal Epsilon. Midway through the battle a Lich dropship belonging to Atriox, Pegoras, emerged from the portal and, heavily damaged, headed towards the UNSC lines. Romeo 008 tailed the Lich after it crash-landed and its supposedly-Banished crew were picked up by Dhas Bhasvod's Covenant forces. The Pelican watched as the Covenant and Banished repeatedly fought one another and recieved periodic intel drops from the Ferrets (a team of SPARTAN-III infiltrators within the Covenant led by Veta Lopis), which were achieved by Mark-G313 flashing his laser aiming module at the Pelican in morse code. When the Ferrets suspected their cover had been blown, they requested an air strike on a an artillery position being set up by the Covenant alongside an extraction. Romeo 008 dropped signal flares in response to forward this request onto Spirit of Fire command and then headed forward to extract the group.[3]

At 2221 on October 13, Romeo 008 touched down to pick up the Ferrets, with Cassidy emerging from the dropship's ramp armed with an MA37 assault rifle to ensure they were not a threat. He initially greeted the new arrivals and invited them aboard the craft, though requested that they disarm and leave their equipment with him to ensure they could not try anything if they were infiltrators. He helped to debrief Veta Lopis, and then joined a small ground team to inspect the site of the AC-220 Vulture strike mission that had been called by Spirit of Fire. He joined Ash-G099 to search the debris and after confirming that the destroyed Seraphs were Banished and not Covenant, used his shotgun to try and ward off a native creature that attacked Ash. The creature's tentacle was severed by the force of the impact, resulting in it emerging from the waterline to grab Cassidy and swallow him whole.[1]

A funeral for Cassidy, alongside Mark-G313, was aboard Spirit of Fire at 1146 hours on October 24. During the ceremony, an empty internment capsule for Cassidy was used bearing the logo of the ship's Air Reconnaissance Command, which was ejected into space to float a long voyage back to the Milky Way. Commander Barre spoke for Cassidy, saying: "From stardust we came, and to stardust we return. John Cassify was a gifted pilot, a loyal comarade, and a true friend. We commit his memory to the stars, to accompany us wherever we fly."[2]

Equipment[edit]

While crewing Romeo 008, Cassidy wore an old flight suit with a helmet and a faded chestplate. The flight suit had the double-bars insignia for a naval lieutenant sewn onto it. He used an old, outdated (for the time) MA37 assault rifle when first encountering Veta Lopis and her troops, and then later a shotgun when on a brief ground deployment.[1]
