First-person shooter

Gears 5 is a third-person shooter developed by The Coalition, and the fifth entry in the Gears of War series. At the game's launch in September 2019, the game had an official tie-in with Halo in the form of two playable characters in the game's multiplayer; Emile-A239 and Kat-B320, both SPARTAN-IIIs originally featured in Halo: Reach. The crossover was first announced at Gamescom 2019, with the tie-in even given some official (albeit non-canon) lore in a subsequent Canon Fodder article.[1]

Halo: Reach Character Pack[edit]

The ''Halo: Reach Character Pack'' announcement trailer.
The Halo: Reach Character Pack was released at the same time as Gears 5's launch. It can only be acquired by purchasing the Gears 5 Ultimate Edition, or upgrading with a DLC purchase of the Gears 5 Ultimate Add-On.[2] Alternatively, the Gears 5 Ultimate Edition can be acquired through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.[1][3]

The pack includes Emile and Kat from Halo: Reach for use in Gears 5's Horde and Escape multiplayer modes, each with a number of unique abilities to use. The pack also contains some cosmetic items including:

  • Noble Team Jack Skin
  • Noble Team Banner
  • Noble Team Blood Spray
  • Noble Team Mark
  • Noble Team Weapon Set

In Gears 5, Emile acts as a character suited for Offensive roles. He is equipped with a drop shield, alongside a shotgun and a knife. Kat is designed to act as a combat engineer, building and repairing fortifications for her team. Kat's unique ability is to deploy a hologram similar to the Halo: Reach armor ability.

Universe and lore[edit]

When the Halo: Reach Character Pack was announced, 343 Industries Franchise Writer Jeff Easterling wrote some official non-canon lore to tie the crossover into the Halo universe. This was framed as UNSC Priority Transmission 00106C-54, a coded message sent by 30871-00289-RF (a member of the "EXOTERIC Division") to Kat, detailing some new findings on an asteroid named TC-858. The report details that the crew investigating the asteroid discovered a portal which appears to be able to transport people to an alternate universe - the Gears of War universe. Kat and Emile are ordered to investigate the portal, with a prowler set to pick them up.[1]

This is not the first time that Gears of War had been given a nod in Canon Fodder. For 2015's April Fools "Canon Fauxder" article, a joke listing of Covenant fringe species included a Locust from the earlier Gears titles.[4]
