Coatings, also known as skins, are an element of player customization in Halo Infinite. They are a seven layer system that change the materials and coloration of a player's armor, weapon, or vehicle.[1]

Coatings act much like base color selection in previous Halo titles. By default, Halo Infinite features an array of average colors for the player to use for free. Additional coatings can be earned through the game's multiple battle passes, events, and challenges. Some coatings could only be obtained through promotional campaigns and the release of certain toys and collectibles that started in 2020. Exclusive coatings, such as Watchdog and Master Builder, can only be obtained through acts such as reaching SR-152 in Halo 5: Guardians, or managing to get a map featured in a playlist in Infinite respectively. Finally, a majority of coatings can be purchased, either individually, or through bundles that rotate in through Infinite's Shop.

While certain coatings such as Neon Superfly are available across all core types, many coatings are exclusive to the core type they launched on, for example, Midway Emerald is armor core exclusive and cannot be used on weapons or vehicles. New coatings released for Season 04: Infection onwards were naturally compatible across all cores. While not every coating from a prior season was originally compatible across their relevant core, updates from the Winter Update through to the July update in 2024 have made the majority viable to use across all available relevant cores.

As of Infinite, every armor coating in the game except for Binding Shadow, Domain Framework, and Front Lines are available across all armor cores. Likewise, every weapon coating in the game except for Eyes Only, Sage Advice, and the Warmaster's Prize coatings are available across all weapon cores. Standard Issue coatings are also exclusive to their native weapons. Finally, every vehicle coating in the game except for Banished Deception is available across all vehicle cores.
