In 2002, the first game, Halo: Combat Evolved, expanded its release outside North America, a sequel, Halo 2, was announced, and the franchise began its expansion into other media.

- Microsoft announces that Gearbox Software is developing a PC port of Halo: Combat Evolved.[4]

- At the X02 event in New York, Bungie officially announces Halo 2 and premieres the Halo 2 Announcement Trailer.[5]

- Xbox LIVE is first released to the public. While Halo: Combat Evolved did not natively support online matchmaking, it laid the groundwork for the online infrastructure that Halo 2 would famously utilize.[6]
