2000 is the year Halo was acquired by Microsoft and officially transitioned into an Xbox launch title.

January 5-8
- Details of Halo are shown at the San Francisco Macworld Expo.[1]

- Halo was featured on the cover of GameStar, a German gaming magazine.[2]
May[edit]
May 11-13
- Bungie was at E3 2000 in Booth #2900 to show off its two upcoming games Oni and Halo.[3]
- The Halo E3 2000 Trailer for Halo: Combat Evolved was shown at the event also.[3]
June[edit]
June 14
- Halo won the E3 2000 Game Critics' Award for Best Action Game.[4] Halo was also runner up for Best Game on PC, being beat by Black & White.[5]
June 19
- Microsoft acquired Bungie.[6] Following the acquisition, Halo was officially announced for the Xbox platform.[7]
- Take-Two Interactive acquired the rights to publish Bungie's upcoming games, including Halo, on Mac and PC.[8]

July 19
- Alexander Seropian and Steve Jobs announced plans for Halo to come to the Mac and PC, reassuring fans despite the Microsoft acquisition.[9]
Late 2000[edit]
- Following the Xbox announcement, Bungie made the critical decision to shift Halo's perspective from a third-person action game to a first-person shooter, drawing on their past experience with the Marathon series.[8]
- Development of the Blam! Engine was significantly altered to optimize it for the Xbox hardware, moving away from its original cross-platform Mac/PC roots.[8]
