"My brother Asum has gone off into the fields, probably to cry where nobody can see him. I shall cry, but not until I kill those who killed my mother. It might not be the humans, but I shall kill them anyway because they threaten Sanghelios and support the Arbiter, and I shall kill whichever Sangheili was responsible as well, because species does not make a man a true brother. And when I have done that, I shall carve my mother’s story into the saga wall of our keep, as a warrior deserves.
Yes, I can wait to shed my tears. I can wait as long as it takes
"
— Dural's thoughts after his mother's death.[1]

Dural 'Mdama, later known only as the Pale Blade, is a Sangheili member of the Servants of the Abiding Truth.[2]

Biography

He is the son of Raia and Jul ‘Mdama, although he does not know who his father is as it is custom for Sangheili not to reveal the name of the father, so that they are solely judged on their abilities and not their heritage. He and his brother Asum lived in the State of Mdama and were taught combat by Naxan in the Bekan Keep. Following the death of his mother, he swore to exact vengeance on her killers and vowed to fight humans, as they supported the Arbiter and posed a threat to Sanghelios.[1] Feeling responsible for his mother's death, Avu Med 'Telcam took Dural on as an apprentice.[3] By the Battle of Requiem Dural had become a leading member of the Servants of the Abiding Truth under the name Pale Blade.[2] Several months later, on January 21, 2558, the Servants of the Abiding Truth were dealt a crushing blow when Avu Med 'Telcam and two of his ranking commanders were assassinated. Although deemed a secondary target for the Spartan-III assassin, Dural was fortunate not to be among the casualties of the attack.[4]
