Plot synopsis[edit]
On December 1, 2525, Dr. Catherine Halsey and her complement of Spartan-IIs aboard the UNSC Persian Gate hold an honorary funeral for Samuel-034 following his death during the incident above Chi Ceti IV. Spartan Blue Team, led by John-117 and composed of Linda-058, Kelly-087, and Frederic-104, come to terms with losing a fellow Spartan in battle and steel themselves for the coming alien threat of the Covenant. Forty-eight hours later, on December 3, Blue Team are briefed by Commander Yao and the AI Nora about a mission to the outer colony of Alpha Corvi II, which is under assault by Covenant forces. While UNSC Marines defend and hold the colony's main city, Jamshid, the Spartans are to be deployed to its outskirts and engage enemy ground forces to help provide relief for UNSC forces while a counterattack is prepared.
Arriving in the Alpha Corvi system, Commander Yao notifies Blue Team that they are being redirected to engage enemy expeditionary forces at Black Reef, an island city and mining settlement on Alpha Corvi II. While there's no UNSC garrison to protect Black Reef's mining facilities, Nora notes that there is a local insurrectionist militia in the city affiliated with the United Rebel Front, although Yoa believes they will be of little help. Nora also briefs Blue Team on their mission-specific Mjolnir modifications, which include active camouflage prototypes and experimental modules tailored to each member's specialization. The Spartans then head down to the planet to halt the Covenant's efforts and investigate whatever objective they have at the mines.
Down on the planet's surface, the team immediately takes fire from the nearby rebel militia. Although Kelly and Fred suggest eliminating them, John opts for a different course of action. With his experimental active camouflage, John sneaks through the small cadre of rebels to confront their leader, Captain Whitaker. John reveals that he and his comrades are responsible for capturing famed URF leader Robert Watts, then warns the rebels that the Covenant will annihilate them all, citing the destruction of the human colony world Harvest. Though initially skeptical of an alliance with the Spartans, Whitaker ultimately decides to aid Blue Team against the alien invaders.
Monitored by John's surveillance drone module, the rebels circle Black Reef's lagoon and strike at Covenant forces to slow and pin them down. When asked why he involved Whitaker's squad, John reminds Blue Team of Dr. Halsey's orders to gather intel on Covenant tactics and technology. John is particularly interested in a mysterious device carried by the Covenant expedition. As Covenant troops move into the mining tunnels, Blue Team halts their pursuit, concerned the enemy might escape below the Reef. However, Captain Whitaker arrives to inform them the maze-like tunnels are a dead end, with the entry shaft being the only way out. Just then, Commander Yoa briefs the Spartans on the orbital situation, alerting them to incoming Covenant reinforcements. Nora notifies John that enemy ships will reach Black Reef in three minutes. John and the rest of Blue Team resume their pursuit and descend into the mines while the rebels hold the position against the inbound Covenant. Although Linda expresses concern that the insurrectionists might desert them, John notes they have nowhere else to go and is certain they will fight for their home. As the enemy descends, Whitaker and his men put politics aside, determined to defend and save their world.
