Official summary[edit]

The Master Chief and Blue Team split from their rebel allies while facing off against Covenant forces in the depths of a mine on Alpha Corvi II, a precarious human colony. The rebel forces have to cut off Covenant reinforcements, but in doing so, their plan may condemn Blue Team to certain destruction. [2]

Plot synopsis[edit]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

As the Covenant assault on Alpha Corvi II rages on, Blue Team pushes deeper into the Black Reef mines in pursuit of a large Covenant complement. On the surface, Captain Whitaker and fellow insurrectionists Fran and Miguel fight to prevent incoming alien reinforcements from reaching the tunnels. Despite overwhelming odds and a lack of UNSC support, the rebels remain defiant, holding the line for their Spartan allies.

Deep within the mines, Blue Team engages the Covenant, whose complement consists of a large number of Sangheili, including Zealots and Ultras. As the Spartans approach the entrance to an underground Forerunner installation, an Elite Field Marshal orders his troops to eliminate the four interlopers. Realizing they have underestimated the enemy's strength, Blue Team is forced to hold their ground, utilizing their specialized weaponry to fend off the overwhelming assault.

Meanwhile, topside, the rebels are nearly overwhelmed. Whitaker resorts to Miguel's suggested plan: destroying the mine entrance and trapping the Covenant forces already inside. He orders Fran and Miguel to blow the entry shaft using two satchel charges and their last jackhammer rounds. The insurrectionists succeed in denying the Covenant their objective, though Miguel and Fran are killed in the resulting explosion.

Down below, the blast causes a partial collapse of the tunnels, allowing seawater to surge into the mines. A torrent sweeps Linda-058 away, severing her connection to Blue Team. She reemerges from the water in a separate tunnel, only to find herself surrounded by enemy forces and in urgent need of backup.

As more Covenant dropships descend on Black Reef, Whitaker hatches a plan to bring in heavier ordnance and redeploys with a small detachment to Bondi Beach. Meanwhile, in orbit, UNSC forces are suffering heavy losses against Covenant warships. Nora informs Commander Yao that their forces in Jamshid are unable to mount a counteroffensive, with casualties approaching thirty percent and the probability of fleet survival decreasing sharply. On Nora's suggestion, Yao orders a general evacuation of all UNSC personnel on the planet. Doctor Catherine Halsey requests a Pelican be reserved for Blue Team, but Yao instructs her to ask again once the Spartans have re-established communication.
