Universe and lore

Main article: Anskum-pattern plasma grenade

The Plasma Grenade in Halo 2: Anniversary is the Anskum-pattern plasma grenade,[2] otherwise known to the UNSC as the Type-1 Antipersonnel Grenade. The model is derived from the Blur Studio high-fidelity model used for the game's prerendered cutscenes, similar to its campaign counterpart. This design is itself based on the Halo 4 iteration of the grenade.

Plasma Grenades can be found as map pickups in most multiplayer maps and modes in Halo 2: Anniversary. At the time of Halo 2: Anniversary's launch in 2014, two Plasma Grenades were included in one of the game's three social loadouts within matchmaking, alongside the Plasma Rifle. While they were removed from certain matchmaking gametypes following launch, built-in gametypes within custom games keep these loadouts as options, and Plasma Grenades can also be added as loadout weapons for players if map loadouts are disabled.

As Halo 2: Anniversary is built on the Halo 4 iteration of the Blam engine, these grenades perform similarly to, although not identically to their campaign counterparts. The grenades found in Halo 2 could not be shot when found on the ground, however, Halo 2: Anniversary's can be, allowing the player to instantly detonate a grenade at an enemy's feet should they walk near it. Additionally, if two plasma grenades are thrown with the second being caught in the first grenade's explosive radius, rather than being launched away harmlessly, the second plasma grenade will "instasplode"; its fuse timer will be cut down dramatically and its trajectory will straighten in the short moment before detonation.
