The Greater Chicago Industrial Zone (often referred to simply as "The Zone") is a Human settlement on Earth, located on the continent of North America near Lake Michigan. An outgrowth of the modern-day American city of Chicago, the Zone is a vast urban sprawl covering large parts of the "former" states of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. [1]

While physically located in the United States, the Zone is a de-facto independent city-state, with its citizens feeling more loyalty to it and, to a lesser extent, the United Nations than to the US government. This loss of national identity was a natural consequence of human colonization of other planets and systems.

The city is assumed to have taken heavy damage during the orbital bombardment that preceded the Covenant occupation of the planet in late 2552.

References to the Zone

The Zone was the hometown of Sargent Major Avery Johnson.

One sector of the city, Chicago Industrial Zone 08, housed the decommissioned Tactical Autonomous Robotic Defense System testing facility [2].
