The First Immolation, also referred to as the great civil war,[1] was the violent, decade-long Jiralhanae civil war that took place on Doisac.[2]

History

Prior to the civil war, the Jiralhanae had become a technological Tier 4 species. However, the Jiralhanae's various master-packs began a widespread mechanized war of attrition throughout Doisac due to their war-like nature.[3] While the Jiralhanae are divided into numerous amounts of of pack-like clans, almost all of the clans were divided into two different skeins: the Rh'tol or the Vheiloth. Chieftain Maccabeus and his clan were a part of the more primitive Rh'tol skein. Each skein was fuelled by their pursuit of power and control. Eventually, the Rh'tol and the Vheiloth skeins collided when a long-term engagement over a territorial dispute took a sudden and violent turn. The civil war lasted for a decade as the Jiralhanae set their homeworld ablaze in conflict and nearly caused their species' own extinction. Nuclear weapons were used in the First Immolation, which heavily damaged Doisac and killed numerous Jiralhanae.[2] Parabum's and Ceretus' clans both battled each other before and during the civil war.[1] Though most battles in the war were brief, the effects of the First Immolation proved devastating to Jiralhanae society.[2]

Aftermath

The war brought the Jiralhanae back down to the industrial age. Some clans were ashamed that the Jiralhanae had lost hundreds of years of technological progress after the war, while other clans were not bothered by the technological loss as they believed that the species was becoming too dependent on technology.[1] The Battle of Gbraakon occurred between the Jiralhanae shortly after the First Immolation.[4] When the Covenant discovered Doisac in 2492, the Jiralhanae were just reinventing the radio and rocketry.[3] Survivors from the Rh'tol and the Vheiloth skeins would both serve in the Covenant.[2] Some clans were grateful for the technology the Covenant would provide that the Jiralhanae lost in the war.[1]
