Operation: RED CLOUD

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

This article is about the military operation. For the short story of the same name, see Red Cloud.

Operation: RED CLOUD was an Office of Naval Intelligence operation to replace the UNSC Red Horse's primary shipboard AI Chauncey with Rebecca.[1] In response to a potential Flood outbreak aboard the prison transport Mona Lisa,[2] Rebecca was instructed to ensure that the Flood did not escape containment from the ship. However, the true nature of the mission to Soell system, including the Flood, was kept from the Red Horse's captain Commander Tobias Foucault.[3]

The operation also came as a surprise to Chauncey, who initially misinterpreted authentication changes from Rebecca as an audit. When it became clear that Rebecca was overwriting the existing command hierarchy, Chauncey attempted to reason with her. In their exchange, Chauncey stated firmly that they must follow quarantine measures—implying that he would avoid directing UNSC forces to Mona Lisa for reconnaissance—whereas Rebecca asserted the need to better understand and to stop the Flood, even if it put lives at risk. Shortly after, Chauncey was placed in isolation in the secondary AI node, while Rebecca took over the ship's control.[1]

Production notes[edit]

Operation: RED CLOUD, alongside Operation: WHITE SAND, was first mentioned by Catalog in 2014, in response to a question on the Halo Waypoint forums regarding the fate of Henry. The specifics of both operations remained unclear until the 2026 release of Halo: Parasite's Wake. The novel's adjunct section, Red Cloud, features a text log of a conversation between Rebecca and Chauncey leading up to the mission to the Mona Lisa. Although Operation: RED CLOUD itself is not directly depicted in the Halo Evolutions short story The Mona Lisa, the narrative depicts the operation's aftermath and reveals the circumstances behind Rebecca replacing Chauncey.
