The SMG featured in Halo 5: Guardians is the M20 PDW, a 5.7×28mm High Velocity, Armor Piercing (HV-AP) submachine gun, and serves as a replacement for the M7 SMG in the post-Covenant war era.

Campaign

In the campaign of Halo 5: Guardians, the SMG is used as the default primary weapon for players playing as Vale on Fireteam Osiris missions. The weapon can also be picked up during the missions Blue Team, Glassed, Unconfirmed, and Evacuation. In the latter three missions, the SMG is sometimes seen in the hands of Meridian's Liang-Dortmund mining security forces, who use the weapon to fight the Prometheans.

In the multiplayer component of Halo 5, the SMG was the default primary weapon for the Breakout mode, replacing the Assault Rifle before it was eventually replaced by the Shotgun on September 30, 2016.

Skins

The SMG has a myriad of skins that can be unlocked and utilized in Halo 5's multiplayer suite. Most of them can be unlocked through the game's Requisition system, with REQ packs providing the bulk of the weapon's unlocks. Nearly every update from Battle of Shadow and Light to Overtime would add in more skins for the SMG.
