Opening[edit]

DELETED WEAPONS, VEHICLES & CHARACTERS
MARCUS LEHTO,
// Art Director
SHI KAI WANG,
// Artist
ROBERT McLEES,
// Artist

  • Robert McLees: I'm Robert McLees. Mainly, I—I make guns.
  • Marcus Lehto: My name is Marcus Lehto. I am the art director for Halo 2.
  • Shi Kai Wang: My name is Shi Kai Wang and, uh, I'm a conceptual artist for Halo 2.

Blind Wolf[edit]

Blind Wolf
  • Shi Kai Wang: Look, it's the Blind Wolf!
  • Marcus Lehto: Blind Wolf. The beloved Blind Wolf.
  • Shi Kai Wang: That was back when you could ride it.
  • Marcus Lehto: Yeah, yeah. You could actually mount the thing and ride it. AI couldn't—could handle it on the AI side—couldn't flock them, couldn't, uh, fit them into gameplay.
  • Shi Kai Wang: Oh, it's nothing on our end. No, it's always programming.
  • Marcus Lehto: We had it all.

Drinol[edit]

DRINOL
  • Robert McLees: Hey, the Drinol.
  • Marcus Lehto: Yeah, hey, Drinol was a big deal.
  • Robert McLees: Hulk.
  • Marcus Lehto: Giant boss character. Yeah, we'd always thought, uh, the Covenant kept this thing, you know, all tied up and—and enraged, and it would bring it out during, uh, the frontline battle.
  • Shi Kai Wang: It would have been a boss character too.
  • Robert McLees: I think he was just too damn big.
  • Marcus Lehto: Good vehicle smasher.
  • Robert McLees: It would have been good.

Special Purpose Sniper[edit]

SPECIAL PURPOSE SNIPER
  • Robert McLees: Yeah, that was the—the special purpose sniper guy, right?
  • Shi Kai Wang: We wanted like him to have, uh, his arms used as like a tripod and he can actually flip left to right, like side to side, so without having to...
  • Marcus Lehto: Yeah.
  • Shi Kai Wang: ...switch weapons or something.
  • Marcus Lehto: We had him being able to hang from trees as well and do some weird, weird stuff like that.
  • Shi Kai Wang: He got pretty far too. We actually textured him and got into the game and stuff. Just...
  • Robert McLees: It took that long to figure out that...
  • Shi Kai Wang: Yeah.
  • Robert McLees: (Laugh) ...he's a piece of crap.

Engineer[edit]

ENGINEER
  • Marcus Lehto: We got this into the game, modeled and textured. It was a technical, technologically savvy character that would rip apart, uh, technology and...
  • Shi Kai Wang: A savant.
  • Marcus Lehto: ...and consume it for the Covenant.

Stalker[edit]

STALKER
  • Marcus Lehto: This is probably the weirdest character I've seen in our sketchbook.
  • Shi Kai Wang: Marcus said we needed a character that was more menacing 'cause every one of our characters look too—
  • Marcus Lehto: We needed something more monstery... monster-like.

Alien trooper[edit]

ALIEN TROOPER
  • Shi Kai Wang: We were just trying to go have a—a physique that's like a biped, but doesn't behave like a biped. So you have all these parts that are missing and all these limbs that are extra limbs.
  • Robert McLees: Oh, this guy's cool.
  • Marcus Lehto: I like this guy. He was supposed to carry his weapon under his belly.
  • Shi Kai Wang: Beginnings of the Hunter, I think.

Doberman gator[edit]

DOBERMAN GATOR
  • Shi Kai Wang: Eyyy...
  • Marcus Lehto: There you go, Rob!
  • Shi Kai Wang: It's the, uh, what is it...?
  • Marcus Lehto: Gator... Doberman...
  • Shi Kai Wang: Doberman Gator...?
  • Marcus Lehto: (Laugh)
  • Shi Kai Wang: The—the yeah.

Keelbug[edit]

KEELBUG
  • Robert McLees: Then the Keelbug.
  • Shi Kai Wang: Keelbug...
  • Robert McLees: ...which was my idea for cleaning up bodies on the battlefield. It would, uh, a few would fly in and cut the body into sections and fly off.
  • Shi Kai Wang: I like the wing where it actually distorts.
  • Marcus Lehto: It made no sense!

Strike Fighter[edit]

STRIKE FIGHTER
  • Marcus Lehto: Aw...
  • Shi Kai Wang: That's cool.
  • Robert McLees: I think it was a strike fighter, right? It was like a defensive fighter for the—the Earth space.
  • Marcus Lehto: Well, it just didn't fit into our gameplay either. We didn't have—
  • Shi Kai Wang: Oh yeah.
  • Marcus Lehto: We didn't have—
  • Shi Kai Wang: Unless it's cinematics.
  • Marcus Lehto: ...we didn't have a purpose for this kind of thing.
  • Robert McLees: It'd be a cinematic-only thing.
  • Marcus Lehto: We needed more of a Blackhawk-type vehicle, which also got dropped.

Doozy[edit]

Doozy
  • Marcus Lehto: Dude, I—I so wanted this vehicle to get into the game.
  • Robert McLees: The Doozy?
  • Shi Kai Wang: Precursor to the Doozy?
  • Marcus Lehto: Yeah.
  • Shi Kai Wang: Still didn't make any sense.
  • Robert McLees: Didn't that thing eventually wind up getting a gun on the back of it, or no?
  • Shi Kai Wang: No. Two people. One got in the front...
  • Marcus Lehto: Yeah, you're right.
  • Shi Kai Wang: ...one in the back.
  • Marcus Lehto: One guy facing backwards.
  • Shi Kai Wang: Yeah.
  • Robert McLees: The nausea seat.

Kestrel[edit]

KESTREL
  • Marcus Lehto: Hovercraft were kind of a strange thing back then. Especially, uh, ones that we needed to remain stationary at a certain altitude that we had very difficult time with some of those. It would have taken a long time for us to, uh, tune the engine physics to make it work right.

Mongoose[edit]

MONGOOSE
  • Shi Kai Wang: Oh man, this is the Mongoose.
  • Marcus Lehto: The ATV.
  • Shi Kai Wang: Yeah. It got cut.
  • Marcus Lehto: We had weapons on the front of it initially. We tried no weapons. The designers couldn't figure out how to integrate it into gameplay. It didn't work in conjunction with vehicles like the Warthog or the Ghost. This broke the model too much. Can't tune it well enough, so we had to cut it out.

Flamethrower[edit]

FLAMETHROWER
  • Robert McLees: This is disappointing as is what it is.
  • Marcus Lehto: Yeah, yeah. We've tried so hard to get this thing into the game. We had effects, model... we even reiterated it. Rob did for Halo 2.
  • Robert McLees: Rebuilt it. The most difficult model to build that I—that I did in Halo was the most difficult rebuild for Halo 2.
  • Marcus Lehto: Yep. Looked beautiful too.
  • Marcus Lehto: Sure. It sucks. Yeah, it's all this good stuff we want to get into the game, but you know that's, uh, part of making games.
