UNSC Navy uniforms

Members of the UNSC Navy wear a variety of dress and service uniforms for the purposes of identification, formality, and practicality.

Dress uniform

White dress

The white uniform consists of a high-collared double-breasted white jacket with gold-colored buttons, and white trousers. The seams of the jacket on the left breast, right shoulder and back are picked out with red stitching. Rank insignia is displayed on the epaulettes and jacket cuffs. Decorations are displayed on the left breast, typically full medals, though heavily-decorated officers such as Fleet Admiral Lord Hood may choose to display only a handful of medals below a smaller but more extensive set of ribbon bars. Personnel who are entitled to may wear an aiguillette with the jacket.

Headgear is a peaked cap, with a different design for females. Hats are decorated with an officer crest. Those ranked Commander and above wear gold "scrambled egg" oak leaves on their caps.[1]

Black dress

The black dress uniform consists of a black tunic, jacket, and trousers, with matching headgear.[note 1] As with the white dress uniform, epaulettes are worn on the shoulders, while ribbons are worn on the left breast, though full medals are not worn. Unlike the white uniform, qualification badges may also be worn with this uniform on the right breast. Rank insignia is also displayed on the cuffs. The tunic's collar is decorated with a pair of five-pointed stars. White gloves may also be worn, and ceremonial weapons may also be carried.[2]

A thin single-breasted jacket showing badges and decorations may be worn over the tunic, typically worn during events that take place outside such as commissioning ceremonies. Headgear is a black peaked cap which bears the officer crest: A stylised black United Nations globe-and-olive-wreath on a silver shield, backed by two crossed gold fouled anchors, surmounted by a silver eagle.[3]

Service uniform

There are at least three major versions of the service uniform. One version consists of a long, light gray tunic and a matching pair of trousers.[note 2] The wearer's surname is displayed on the right breast; rank insignia is displayed high on the left breast, with the ship emblem displayed immediately below and ribbons beneath the emblem. Epaulettes are worn on the shoulders, though they do not display rank insignia.[4][5][6]

The other known service uniform is usually blue gray,[7][8][note 3] though the variant worn by flag officers is white and resembles the standard white dress uniform.[7][9][10] This version is also comprised of a long-sleeved tunic and matching trousers. The wearer's surname is displayed on the right breast and ribbons are worn on the left; flag officers also wear medals on the right breast below their ribbons. Rank insignia is displayed on each shoulder board, as well as on either side of the collar and on the cuffs. A magnetic pistol holster in mounted on the right thigh. A name tag displaying the officer's last name is mounted on the right hand side of the uniform while ribbons are worn on the left hand side. Rank insignia is displayed on the shirt cuffs, collar, and shoulder boards. Flag officers also wear peaked caps with this uniform.[7][9][10]

Following the Human-Covenant War, a more formal but less-decorated service uniform was adopted.[note 4] The officer's uniform design consists of a gray wool double-breasted tunic and jacket, and gray trousers. Rank insignia is displayed on the epaulettes on both the tunic and the jacket, though insignia can also be displayed on the jacket's collar. Both the tunic and jacket have large black shoulder and side sections, and appear extremely similar. However, the tunic has a black collar while the jacket does not, and a gold device is displayed there instead of rank insignia. The UNSC emblem is prominently displayed on the left breast of the jacket and tunic, with a name board below it. Decorations are not displayed on this uniform. Headgear for officers is a white-topped peaked cap displaying the officer's crest. The enlisted uniform design consists of a single-breasted belted black tunic and matching trousers, with the UNSC emblem displayed prominently on the left breast.[11]

Working uniform

Combat-ready uniform

The combat-ready uniform[12] is worn by both commanding officers and junior crewmembers.[13] It consists of a double-breasted olive drab tunic, bearing the seal of the UNSC Defense Force, with the wearer's surname printed above the seal. It is worn with matching trousers with cargo pockets, a belt-worn pistol holster, and a baseball-style cap, also bearing the UNSCDF seal.[13][14][15] The combat-ready uniforms of ship commanders bear the ship emblem on the right shoulder. Medals and ribbons are not worn with this uniform.[13][14]

A more austere version of this uniform features the wearer's name on the left breast. Rank insignia are not displayed on the shoulders, and UNSCDF affiliation is also not displayed. A cap is not worn with this version. This is possibly a training uniform, as its only known use was by Drill Instructors on Reach during SPARTAN-II training.[16]

Coveralls

Service coveralls are the basic uniform worn by UNSC Navy personnel while on duty.[17] Enlisted rank insignia is worn on the upper sleeve.[18] Most working uniforms are comprised of a light gray shirt, matching trousers, and a belt; these uniforms also have darker sections that display the UNSC insignia and overall resemble the combat-ready uniform.[5][19] Others are comprised of a single jumpsuit and are colored based on the wearer's technical specialty: Red, green, and blue are the most commonly used colors.[7][note 5] With both versions, the wearer's name is displayed on the left breast.

  5. ^ This section does not list all the colors seen in Halo: Combat Evolved, as all the working uniforms in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary are gray and those seen in Halo 3 are red, blue, or green.
