It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with Pistol. The reason given was: Technically, a sidearm doesn't have to be a pistol. However, aside from the M7, all the weapons on this page are pistols. This article is underutilized and effectively redundant. |
Sidearm weapons are a class of light weapons.
These personal defense weapons (PDW) are much smaller than the standard shoulder-fired military service weapons or support weapons. They permit unimpeded movement and immediate access and use, especially during close-quarters combat or when operating vehicles, and usually requires only one hand to heft; which may allow the possibility of dual wielding. Usually, uniformed personnel wear their sidearm weapons openly, while personnel in civilian attire have their weapon concealed under their clothes. A sidearm may be carried alone, or as a back-up to a primary service weapon.
