Cortana's depiction of keyships departing to repopulate the galaxy

The reintroduction was a Forerunner project to restore life in the Milky Way galaxy following the activation of the Halo Array in 97,445 BCE. All species and specimens the Lifeworkers had collected over the years in the Conservation Measure were reseeded to their original home planets with the help of keyships during this event.[1][2] The reintroduction lasted for over a century, with humans as the first species to be reintroduced to their homeworld and the San'Shyuum being the last.[3]

It was during the reintroduction that the Xalanyn, a previously undocumented species, were first discovered by 117649 Despondent Pyre.[4][5] Fearing that the inexplicable survival of another advanced civilization would disrupt the reintroduction,[6] the Forerunners had the Xalanyn imprisoned indefinitely on Installation 07.[7]
