Gray Team is a group of SPARTAN-II commandos of the UNSC Naval Special Warfare Group. It consists of Adriana-111, Jai-006, and Mike-120, the most independent and individualistic of the SPARTAN-IIs. These qualities were used to create a unit trained to operate for extended periods with minimal supervision and support. Their Mark IV MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor is likewise colored gray.
Compared to the other SPARTAN-IIs, such as the conceptually similar Black Team, Gray Team's training placed additional emphasis on individual thought and action. This made them suitable to execute and survive covert missions deep behind enemy lines with no support from friendly units. Their assignments focused on disruption of enemy operations followed by a stealthy extraction.
History
Gray Team was formed from the three SPARTAN-II candidates who were the most difficult to control during training. This manifested in resistance to indoctrination, numerous escape attempts, and a lack of social integration with other personnel. This disruptive behavior was costly, resulted in injuries to trainers, and the theft and destruction of at least one Pelican dropship. Being unconventional recruits in an unconventional project, the decision was made to train the trio separately from the others and form them into their own unit.
The Cole Protocol was implemented to slow the Covenant's advance by denying them navigational information of UNSC space. Some insurrectionist enclaves survived the Covenant advance by remaining hidden. Unfortunately, these rebels did not fall under UNSC jurisdiction, and thus had no obligation to honor the Cole Protocol. In 2535, Gray Team was sent to locate and infiltrate these enclaves and enforce the protocol by purging the navigation databases of any rebel ships they found. This ultimately led to the Battle of the Rubble. Gray Team aided the Rubble under the command of Lieutenant Jacob Keyes and participated in the Battle of Metisette, which resulted in the destruction of the Covenant forces in the immediate area. With the help of the Template:UNSCship and her crew, they completed their mission and returned to UNSC-controlled space on the Midsummer Night. There they asked for another ONI Prowler, having abandoned their freighter, the Petya. They were given a Prowler and assigned a new mission even deeper behind Covenant lines, a mission which the unit happily accepted.
In 2551, Gray Team was deemed too inaccessible to be recalled to Reach. They were not present when the Covenant invaded the planet, having been out of contact for about a year.[2] This was not cause for undue concern, as many of Gray team's missions had been executed in a similar fashion. Gray Team, Black Team, and Jorge-052 were the only operational SPARTAN-IIs not present at the briefing for Operation: RED FLAG.[3][4][note 1]

Given the context of this note, Halsey was likely referring to Jorge and perhaps other SPARTAN-IIs who, in addition to Gray Team, were not recalled for Operation: RED FLAG.
