Quan Ah was a shrewd, audacious girl from the Unified Earth Government's Outer Colonies and the daughter of an insurrectionist leader who lived during the latter years of the Human-Covenant War.[1][3] At the age of sixteen her home was attacked by the Covenant but she was saved by the Spartan-II John-117, making her the colony's only survivor.[1] Upon learning thereafter that she might be executed on the orders of a United Nations Space Command officer, the Master Chief did his best to convince Quan he wanted to help her.[2]

Quan Ah's existence was first unveiled by Showtime on April 17, 2019.[1] In the television series the network is airing she will be played by Korean-Australian actress Yerin Ha.[1][5][6] Ha was discovered during a worldwide casting search and is known for her stage work in Australia.[1] Casting notices for the show obtained by The Hollywood Reporter and publicized on November 1, 2018 had mentioned a character named Jenny who was reportedly to be played by a woman of Asian descent between the ages of eighteen and twenty years old.[7] The possibility exists that "Jenny" was a code name or working name for Quan Ah.[1][7] Additionally, a press release put out by Showtime on August 2, 2019 named the character as "Kwan Ha" rather than Quan Ah.[8] "Quan" and "Kwan" are both variations of the same Chinese surname.[9]
