Vice Admiral Ysionris Jeromi is a human flag officer of the UNSC Navy and the commanding officer of the hospital ship UNSC Hopeful. His exploits during the Human-Covenant War as the commanding officer of the Hopeful have made the Vice Admiral a legend throughout the colonies.[1]

Biography[edit]

On multiple occasions, Jeromi has taken the UNSC Hopeful, a hospital ship with no weapons or armor to speak of, into battle to save the lives of the critically wounded aboard damaged ships. He has saved tens of thousands of lives, and more than once faced a court-martial. He had gained and lost rank over the years, but he has also won the UNSC's Colonial Cross twice.[1] He was an Admiral in 2525,[3] though was later demoted and ultimately rose through the ranks again to attain the rank of Vice Admiral by 2551.[1]

Jeromi was a personal friend and mentor to Dr. Catherine Halsey, considering her his "star pupil" and disapproving of her choice to work with the Office of Naval Intelligence. This disapproval made her own decisions more difficult, though he did ultimately unknowingly assist her in the early stages of the SPARTAN-II program by analysing several "hypothetical" augmentation procedures proposed for testing on bonobo chimpanzees. In the report, he outlined the dangers and his objections to such a process, unaware that Halsey ultimately used the proposed augmentations in Project ASTER: the SPARTAN-II augmentation program.[3]

In February 2551, Vice Admiral Jeromi commanded the Hopeful as the ship left the Epsilon Eridani system under mysterious circumstances, lacking its usual escort and with unusual cargo manifests. Dr. Halsey noted these aberrations, in reality in place due to the ongoing SPARTAN-III Gamma augmentation program aboard the ship, though was unable to ascertain their meaning.[4] While Gamma Company were recieving their augmentations, Jeromi took posession of a slipspace communications probe that had been sent to the station from Onyx, addressed to Lieutenant Commander Kurt Ambrose. At the time, Jeromi was unaware Onyx had such an slipspace comms launcher, but did note that the probe's slipspace entry vector did not match a probe arriving from either Earth or Reach. He allowed Kurt to use his office to read the message (in actuality, from Deep Winter concerning the Gamma augmentation program), though remained suspicious of Kurt's actions - ordering Kurt to tell him if the message warned of any kind of threat to the Hopeful or its patients, regardless of if the message ordered it or not.[1]

Production notes[edit]

Jeromi appears in Issue #1 of Halo: Fall of Reach - Boot Camp, though his appearance has several minor inconsistencies with the written text in Halo: The Fall of Reach and Halo: Ghosts of Onyx. In Halo: The Fall of Reach, Jeromi's message to Halsey discussing the SPARTAN-II augmentations is dated as being sent on March 9, 2525,[3] while in the comic the message is sent to Halsey in 2517, on the first day of the SPARTAN-II training. The animated adaptation of The Fall of Reach supports the original text, with Jeromi's message sent to Halsey around the time of the augmentation procedures.

Likewise, in Ghosts of Onyx, Jeromi is described as as having pale blue eyes,[1] while the comic depicts his eyes as brown.
