Talk:Junjie Chen

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

Last Name[edit]

Okay, so there obviously seems to be some doubt as to the last name of this character, given the fact that he's never been given one in his own article. The latest H4:FUD teaser has a follow-up interview (from "Halo after Dawn", also on Machinima.com) where Osric Chau's character is referred to as "Cadet Chen". Can anyone else locate any other sources that confirm this name so that we can finally give this kid a family? Right off the top of my head, I can say that IMDB.com has him listed as "JJ Chen" on their H4:FUD page, but then they also have Steve Downes listed as the voice actor for the Chief, which doesn't speak highly of their research department, apparently. I'd feel most comfortable with a 3rd source. DJenser 14:01, 1 September 2012 (EDT)

Prophet[edit]

Would anyone mind if in a trivia section, I include that Osric Chau is a "prophet of the lord" on the show Supernatural and how his death in Forward Unto Dawn mirrors that of the Prophet of Truth's in Halo 3? Grizzlei

I don't really know how much we can say JJ's death mirrors Truth's. Yes they were both stabbed with an Energy Sword but that's where the similarity ends. Truth was stabbed in the back, JJ in the chest. Truth gave dramatic last words, JJ stayed silent. Truth held his ground, JJ was running away.--Emblem 1.jpg Rusty - 112 19:30, 28 October 2012 (EDT)
I was referring more to him being a Prophet [in Supernatural] and how both Thel 'Vadam and the unnamed Zealot used an energy sword and lifted them up slightly. Just a cool tidbit I thought that could be added. Grizzlei
Supernatural doesn't seem significant in the Halo series or the lore entirely, not at all actually, and there are only a few ways to die from an energy sword (two cadets were impaled in the show, including JJ Chen). So... I don't think its necessary. -Killjax (talk | contribs)
Missing the point entirely dude... Grizzlei
There deaths are merely a coincidence to die in similar ways. If I'm missing the point, then what is the point to add the trivia if the directors gave no notion or implication to the act. I guess it is a cool little "tidbit", but not exactly noteworthy. -Killjax (talk | contribs)
You have so so much to learn, sweetie. Grizzlei
I get the whole prophet-prophet link you're going for. But JJ was lifted five feet into the air. Truth's feet never even left the ground (you can see it here). Truth's death if anything is more like the nameless cadet Lasky sees getting killed as he pokes his head out of the dorm room [Elite grabs victim from behind, impales through the back, victim falls forward].--Emblem 1.jpg Rusty - 112 19:51, 28 October 2012 (EDT)
Supernatural is my favorite show, but I don't think we need that trivia because it probably wasn't intentional or a nod and how it's sort of a stretch.--Ender the Xenocide 19:54, 28 October 2012 (EDT)
You people are ruining this wiki with your boringness and failure to adhere to the most basic of funness. Grizzlei
I see no problem with having a fun reference like this in the article. I don't see how it would "hurt" to have it in the article.--Spartacus TalkContribs 20:01, 28 October 2012 (EDT)
Will have to find the exact articles, but there have been plenty of times when media references have been cut from articles for being superfluous. Letting this one in but not the others seem like an odd exception. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 20:06, 28 October 2012 (EDT)
I don't see how it is at all relevant or worthy of note. "funness" Is a, not a real word and b, not a valid reason to include information of any sort. I mean honestly, if you took every coincidence or overlap in the scifi genre and added it to this wiki we'd be drowning in the crap. Ax the idea and move on to something more relevant or useful. ProphetofTruth 20:12, 28 October 2012 (EDT)
A) Funness is a word if you have a sense of relaxation. B) This wiki is full of worthless trivia. This is a direct reference to two universes that were filmed only a few kilometers apart. And I apologize if you thought I was referring to you and not the High Prophet of Truth, voice of the Covenant. Grizzlei
Ah, now I remember some cut ones. The Rookie being an allegory for Dante in The Inferno, since he's guided by a Vergil while passing through nine circles of hell, and 343 Guilty Spark's design being a reference to HAL 9000. Tuckerscreator(stalk) 20:24, 28 October 2012 (EDT)

@Grizzlei, I don't really see any problems with it. It's pretty interesting if you ask me & wouldn't hurt being that's it just "trivia". Post it here (or on the article) so we can see how it's worded and we'll go from there.--Killamint [Comm|Files] 10:26, 29 October 2012 (EDT)

A bit of dissection on Grizzlei's first comment. Grizzlei appears to suggest two trivia to be added in the article, (1) that Osric Chau, who played Junjie Chen, also played the character Kevin Tran (aka Prophet of the Lord in Supernatural, chosen to interpret word of God) and (2) his death in Forward Unto Dawn mirrors that of the Prophet of Truth's in Halo 3. That's as clear as it can get. The first is irrelevant since that bit has nothing to do with the Halo franchise. The second, as Rusty already said, is not that similar. — subtank 10:38, 29 October 2012 (EDT)

Oh...see I thought it was two pieces of trivia in one, not two seperate trivia.--Killamint [Comm|Files] 11:06, 29 October 2012 (EDT)
It is even more flawed if you look from Grizzlei's perspective:
  • Osric Chau, who played Junjie Chen, played Kevin Tran in Supernatural. Kevin Tran, in that show, is a/the Prophet of the Lord.
  • On a wholly unrelated note, Junjie Chen (not Kevin Tren who is also a/the Prophet of the Lord in Supernatural) was stabbed in the chest, almost similar as to how Truth was stabbed in the back.
See the connection? Grizzlei is trying to connect Kevin Tran's alternate identity (as Prophet of the Lord) to Junjie Chen in FuD, and then connecting to the similarities of Truth's death. In a way: Osric Chau = (Kevin Tran/Prophet of the Lord -> Junjie Chen, whose death ≈ Truth's death). Makes sense? — subtank 11:23, 29 October 2012 (EDT)
You oversimplified "my perspective" by about twelve parsecs and yourself disproved that the latter of the two points is a "wholly unrelated note." Grizzlei
Trivia is simple, it is not meant to be complex. Uphill battle, cut your losses. ProphetofTruth 13:40, 29 October 2012 (EDT)

Alright guys, let's put this to a rest before it deteriorates into a flame war. Points have been made, no need to continue it.--Spartacus TalkContribs 14:09, 29 October 2012 (EDT)
