During the empire's reign, Commandos formed an elite part of the [[Skirmisher]] contingent that were deployed by the Covenant. Commandos were specifically trained and designed to form specialized combat [[file]]s and infantry hunter-killer units. They operate in discrete close-knit groups with extremely specific mission parameters. It is unclear whether the Kig-Yar Commandos have any relation to the [[Commando Unit]] commissioned by the [[Sangheili]] in the Covenant's later years, or whether these units operated within the [[Special Warfare Group]] or [[Covenant Special Operations]].

The first Commandos were selectively picked from sectarian societies from the [[asteroid]]s that orbit [[Chu'ot]]. The Kig-Yar on these asteroids were sustained by [[Wikipedia:grey market|gray market]] trade and developed free from the government that dominated the Kig-Yar homeworld of [[Eayn]]. They were employed by the original [[Kig-Yar]] government's militia to fight off recurring looting and [[piracy]] that was common on the asteroids and other Kig-Yar colonies in an extremely ruthless and precise fashion. When the [[Covenant]] first arrived in the [[Y'Deio system]], the Commandos joined forces with the pirates in an attempt to fend off the intruders.{{Ref/Reuse|Enc11}}

Commandos generally wield the same weaponry and have the same armor ratings as lower-ranking [[Skirmisher Murmillo|Murmillones]]. Occasionally in combat, they will utilize [[Type-27 hologram|hologram]]s of themselves in order to fool their enemies in attacking it instead of them. The Commando is the second-highest rank of Skirmisher in ''Halo: Reach''. They have slightly higher health than the previous rank of Murmillo, though they do not possess arm shields. Instead, they can project Holograms of themselves, which they send forth from hiding to then attack distracted foes. They most often wield Needle rifles or Focus rifles, and rarely field pistols.
