- Gunnery Sergeant Waller: "Negative! They're closing in too fast. We'll keep 'em busy as long as we can."
- Cortana: "Give 'em hell, Marine."
- — Waller's last known communication.[3]
Sergeant Waller was a non-commissioned officer in the UNSC Marine Corps. He was attached to the UNSC Pillar of Autumn in September 2552 and participated in the Battle of Installation 04.[1][3][2]
Biography[edit]
Waller was one of the Marines stationed on the UNSC Pillar of Autumn when the ship escaped from the Fall of Reach on August 30, 2552. When the ship arrived at Installation 04 on September 19, it was attacked by the Covenant, marking the beginning of the Battle of Installation 04.[4] After a majority of the UNSC forces regrouped, Waller led a team of marines alongside Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 in a battle over the control for a structure known to the Covenant as the Silent Cartographer, said to contain a room with a map of the entire installation. After the beachhead had been successfully secured, Waller was placed in charge of holding it while John-117 departed with a Warthog LRV and two Marines to locate the map room. When the Master Chief later returned with a second Warthog scavenged from Bravo 022's wreckage, the Marines had endured two Covenant assaults but still held the beach, and remained "undeterred". Two members of Waller's unit, Hosky and an unidentified corporal, boarded John's new vehicle and left, leaving the unit down two further Marines.[3]
Later, as the Master Chief was battling his way into the structure, Foehammer warned Waller and his forces of another inbound Covenant assault. Cortana advised him that they would be able to more easily defend themselves if they retreated into the Silent Cartographer itself. Waller responded that they wouldn't be able to make it, lamenting that the Covenant were approaching too quickly, and pledged that he and his men would buy the Master Chief and Cortana as much time to find the Cartographer as they could. Grimly, Cortana acknowledged their sacrifice by encouraging them to "give 'em hell".[3] It is presumed that he and the remaining Marine forces under his command died in the engagement.[2][Note 1]
Production notes[edit]
Waller was first introduced in the novelization Halo: The Flood to act as a canonical replacement for scripted dialogue spoken by Gunnery Sergeant Marcus Stacker during the Halo: Combat Evolved level The Silent Cartographer. As such, Waller's in-game appearance is also voiced by Pete Stacker, who voices Gunnery Sergeant Stacker and Captain Jacob Keyes in the game. Of these characters, Stacker was only credited for playing Keyes.[5] Stacker is among the Marines who can make the "I didn't know you made house calls, Foehammer," quip at the beginning of the level; though, in Halo: The Flood, the line is said by "a Marine".[6] Both Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo: Campaign Evolved retained Stacker's appearance in-game.

Notes[edit]
- ^ Waller's fate is never specifically elaborated upon in Halo: The Flood Though in Halo: Combat Evolved, if the player returns to their original landing zone after this point, they will find that all of the Marines who'd remained there had died. As a result, it is presumed Waller died.
