Private Riley was an enlisted serviceman in the UNSC Marine Corps. Serving as a member on Fireteam Charlie, he was attached to the UNSC Pillar of Autumn in September 2552 and participated in the Battle of Installation 04.[2]

Biography[edit]

Riley was one of the Marines stationed on the UNSC Pillar of Autumn when the ship escaped from the Fall of Reach on August 30, 2552.[3] On September 19, 2552 he was listed as a member of Marine Security Detail C on Charlie Shift on Pillar of Autumn's duty roster alongside M. Fitzgerald.[4] When the ship arrived at Installation 04 on September 19, it was attacked by the Covenant, marking the beginning of the Battle of Installation 04.[3] Having survived when the UNSC forces made landfall on the ring, Riley was part of the UNSC team led by Captain Jacob Keyes and Sergeant Major Avery Johnson, to secure a supposed Covenant weapons cache that a captured Sangheili, 'Qualomee, had disclosed to them during an interrogation.[1] Unbeknownst to them, the "cache" was in fact a Flood containment facility. Inside the facility, the marines and Captain Keyes were ambushed by Flood pod infectors. Riley was the first casualty, with a pod infector's needle-like penetrator piercing his skin to reach his spine.[1] Although a fellow marine came to his rescue,[Note 1] Riley was killed by the creature.[2]

The Flood-infected Riley was likely killed by John-117 during the latter's escape from the installation, by the UNSC or Covenant forces, or when the Chief destroyed Halo.[5]

Production notes[edit]

  • Riley first appeared in Halo: Combat Evolved as an unidentified marine. He was named in the game's novelization Halo: The Flood.
  • Riley's appearance varies across the games. In Halo: Combat Evolved, Riley wears fatigues and a boonie hat, much like Manuel Mendoza; this gameplay model was used to depict Wallace Jenkins in Bungie.net's outtakes gallery.[6] In Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo: Campaign Evolved, Riley wears a full set of body armor, including a CH252 helmet.

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ In Halo: Combat Evolved, it is Bisenti who helps Riley and says, "Hold still". While the same happens in both Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo: Campaign Evolved, the role is given to Kappus in Halo: The Flood. For more information, see here.
