Lasky's Theme is the twelfth track on Volume 2 of the Halo 4: Original Soundtrack.

Overview[edit]

The piece opens with very low, sustained strings, possibly cellos and basses alongside deep synth pad creating a drone. A high, ethereal, and slightly dissonant sound enters, could be processed strings, or a synth effect, maybe a specific wind instrument like a glass harmonica or heavily reverberated flute. Establishing an ominous, mysterious, vast, and slightly unsettling atmosphere—a sense of desolation or anticipation of something significant.

Emerging from the anticipatory atmosphere is the brass, carrying a melancholic but noble melody, supported by the low strings and subtle woodwind colours weaving around the melody, solidifying the main motif. It flows smoothly, almost lyrical; introspective, sorrowful, yet with an undercurrent of hope or resilience.

Then comes a bridge that leads to a thematic development; brass rising and falling—a fragmented variation of the main motif, supported by sustained strings, and piano enters with arpeggiated figures, adding a new texture and rhythmic movement. Brass re-emerges—the main motif—with warmth and depth, while arpeggiated piano figures continue to enhance the melody. Three notes of, an almost alien, synthesised sound then enters as the brass descends. There's a sense of anticipation, almost like yearning for what's coming, with a bit more hopeful and determination, though still tinged with the earlier melancholy.

The orchestration gradually thickens as the pace quickens, percussion enters, initially snare drums, and then timpani—adding a martial and driving quality, brass soaring more heroically with a fanfare of the main motif, alongside strings that are still clinging to a hint of melancholy.

The track then explodes into a full orchestra; timpani hits, cymbals clash, brass fanfare soaring, strings driving the rhythm with more agitated and urgent ostinato, steady crescendo—building towards a significant event—a sense of excitement and anticipation. String ostinato becomes more prominent, snares become more urgent as they near the climax. Climax arrives with timpani hits and cymbals clashing loudly; brass fanfare sweeping—main motif more heroic than ever, strings rising and sharing the ostinato with driving snares, powerful and prominent choir joining, leading to a significant and awe-inspiring crescendo where there is only triumph, only pure heroism, only raw climactic energy. This energy significantly drops as the climax ends on the high note crescendo, leaving arpeggiated piano figures hanging in the air.

The piece then returns to a state that's parallel to how it began. The slightly dissonant, high, ethereal sound re-appears from the few seconds of silence. The main motif returns for one last time—brass, lone—but ditching the overt melancholy of the opening for a more reflective, uncertain feel, perhaps with a glimmer of hope and heroism. Arpeggiated piano figures and sustained strings provide texture. This concludes in a peaceful resolution—one that leads to a tranquil coda where texture thins—leaving behind a sense of the vastness and the lingering impact of this journey, a climactic event.
