Fireteam Yankee was a UNSC Marine Corps fireteam that served aboard the UNSC Pillar of Autumn and participated in the Battle of Installation 04. The unit notably fought alongside Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 and Fireteam Zulu during the Assault on the Control Room.[2]
Operational history[edit]
Battle of Installation 04[edit]
- Main article: Battle of Installation 04
Following the crash of the Pillar of Autumn on Installation 04 on September 19, 2552, Fireteam Yankee was among the marine units that secured and operated out of Alpha Base.[3] The following day, Fireteam Yankee was deployed alongside Fireteam Zulu via a D77-TC Pelican dropship to a snowy canyon on the ring. During their descent, the dropship was engaged by Covenant Banshees. After successfully dropping off Fireteam Zulu and an M12 Warthog in the first valley, the Pelican attempted to egress into the adjacent canyon but was shot down, crashing into the canyon wall.[1]
Most members of Fireteam Yankee survived the crash and secured a defensive perimeter in the second valley near an M808B Scorpion. They successfully held their position against approaching Covenant forces until John-117 and Fireteam Zulu arrived from the first valley to relieve them. The marines continued to support John-117 as he fought his way through the subsequent canyons. When the Master Chief was forced to ascend the final canyon via a subterranean Forerunner structure, the marines remained behind to secure the area and await aerial extraction.[1][2]
Production notes[edit]
- Prior to the release of the mod Halo: Campaign Evolved, the marines defending the Scorpion tank were widely assumed by the fanbase to be members of Fireteam Zulu who did not deploy at the first drop zone. Halo: Campaign Evolved officially designated this second group of marines as Fireteam Yankee. This distinction was likely introduced because combining both groups into a single unit would have exceeded the typical size of a UNSC fireteam, which is normally limited to three or four operators.[4]
- In Halo: Combat Evolved, Sergeant Major Avery Johnson is guaranteed to spawn among the marines in Fireteam Yankee. Canonically, Johnson was exploring the Flood containment facility with Captain Keyes at the time. This is a result of Bungie reusing limited marine character assets. Halo: Campaign Evolved removes Sergeant Johnson from the group.
