South America is a continent of the planet Earth.
History
The Rain Forest Wars
South America was the site of the Rain Forest Wars during 2162. The war was fought between the United Nations, and the Koslovics and Frieden rebel factions.[2] The wars bred famine and destruction and when paired with post-Interplanetary War population surges, threatened to destabilize the economy in 2170.[3]
Human-Covenant war
Just prior to the Battle for Earth, a group of Spartan 1.1s led by Kevin Morales had hid a Pelican in Chile.[4]
Post Covenant-War
In late 2557 or early 2558, as an increasing number of asylum seekers from the former Covenant immigrated to Earth, cities like Rio de Janiero's population swelled as a result. Later, a Sangheili terrorist attempted to detonate a tactical nuclear weapon in the city, but was ultimately stopped by UNSC special operations forces.[5]
