Sidearm weapons are a class of light weapons.
These personal defense weapons (PDW) are much smaller than the standard shoulder-fired military service weapons or support weapons. They permit immediate access and use, permit unimpeded movement during close-quarters combat, and usually requires only one hand to heft; which may allow the possibility of dual wielding. Usually, uniformed personnel wear their sidearm weapons openly, while personnel in civilian attire have their weapon concealed under their clothes. A sidearm may be carried alone, or as a back-up to a primary service weapon.
