The recipient must involve acts where he or she chooses to put his or her life on the line in order to save his or her comrades. The medal is usually awarded in a ceremony. It is one of the highest honors a UNSC Marine/crewman can earn.

John-117 won one of these by diving into a bunker full of Covenant, taking out twenty of them by himself, and ultimately saving a platoon of Marines pinned down by a Shade prior to 2552.
