Vending machines are human machines designed and constructed for quick and easy food consumption. Wall mounted configurations can be found in several human buildings and UNSC military ships, such as the UNSC Pillar of Autumn.[1][2] Freestanding configurations are also common on space stations[3] and in cities.[4][5][6] Vending machines can be equipped with holographic clerks to help communicate to customers, but these automatons are very simplistic and cannot respond to complex questions.[7]
Some vending machines serve a variety of items,[1][6] while others only sell products under its brand.[8][9]
On June 3, 2560, after being brought to the FFG-611 following the Battle of the Silent Auditorium, Joyeuse discovered that the ship's AI had scrubbed all encrypted and eyes-only data before self-terminating as the vessel broke up. All that was left was personnel files and historical data left in the most unremarkable places such as learning modules, personal datapads, entertainment, and even vending machines that formed a patchwork of the rich history of humanity.[10]
