The '''Swords of Sanghelios''' are an alliance of [[Sangheili]] [[keep]]s{{Ref/Reuse|Mythos144}}{{Ref/Book|Id=Enc22p195|Enc22|Page=295}} that serve as the effective governing body for their eponymous homeworld of [[Sanghelios]]. The Swords of Sanghelios are a group that have arisen in several incarnations throughout Sangheili history. The majority were formed in [[The Former Age]] of Sangheili history, during their ancient and colonial eras. The first iteration of the Swords were formed centuries before the Sangheili attained spaceflight, as a sworn brotherhood of kaidons that aimed to overthrow the rule of [[Irsu 'Labat]], the "Tyrant of Qivro". 'Labat ruled the continent of [[Qivro]] under a violently oppressive regime and ruled as a tyrannical judge-king. The stories of the original Swords of Sanghelios and their brotherhood, loyalty, honour, and sacrifice went on to inspire the repeated reforging of the organisation long after 'Labat's death.{{Ref/Reuse|hwp sos}}{{Ref/Book|Enc22|Page=244}}

The Swords of Sanghelios were reformed for the first time in three millennia at the conclusion of the [[Human-Covenant War]]. In the war's final weeks, the Covenant erupted into a massive [[Great Schism|civil war]] that pitted the loyalist Jiralhanae against the [[Sangheili]]. Thanks to the [[NOVA bombing of Joyous Exultation|timely assassination]] of Imperial Admiral [[Xytan 'Jar Wattinree]], the only major Sangheili leader to emerge in the chaos was Arbiter Thel 'Vadam, who went on to lead the [[Covenant separatists|Sangheili separatist]] forces in an alliance with the [[United Nations Space Command]] to destroy the Covenant and [[Battle of Installation 00|end the war]].

After the war's end, the Arbiter's forces returned to Sanghelios and found the world embroiled in civil unrest due to the upheaval of the Covenant's social and political moors. In the early post-war months, the [[Servants of the Abiding Truth]] began an insurrection on Sanghelios aimed at deposing the Arbiter due to his percieved "blasphemy".{{Ref/Novel|HGla|Chapter=3}} In reality the Servants were backed by humanity's [[Office of Naval Intelligence]], who aimed to keep the Sangheili in a state of infighting to ensure that they could not attack humanity again. Between 2553-2558, one of the primary conflicts fought by the Swords of Sanghelios were the [[Blooding Years]]; the various hostilities between the Swords and numerous Sangheili ex-Covenant warlords. Chief among these was [[Jul 'Mdama]], who had risen to prominence among the Servants of the Abiding Truth before going on to form [[Jul 'Mdama's Covenant|his own faction]] in the name of the old Covenant, based out of the colony world [[Hesduros]].

Over the next six years, the Swords would engage in hostilities with several Sangheili factions. In March of [[2555]], Swords forces would thwart a plot by [[Otar 'Bemet]] to take revenge against the Arbiter. At the same time, the UNSC requested the Arbiter's aid in [[Operation: FAR STORM|re-activating]] the [[Excession]] in order to dispatch a team there to disable the activation sequence of the [[Halo Array]]. However, due to the bulk of the Swords forces being preoccupied in the ongoing civil war, 'Vadam was only able to send a [[Mayhem|Corvette]] with a small strike team of Sangheili to aid the humans.{{Ref/Novel|HitD|Chapter=3}}

In October 2558, Sanghelios burst into global war{{Ref/Novel|LoO|Chapter=21}} with Jul 'Mdama's Covenant attacking the Swords. The Arbiter received assistance from the UNSC's [[Fireteam Osiris]], who were searching for [[John-117|MCPO John-117]], in repelling the invasion.{{Ref/Reuse|soslevel}} After intense battles along the coast in [[Nuusra]], the Swords of Sanghelios eventually pushed [[Jul 'Mdama's Covenant]] back to their final stronghold: [[Sunaion]], where 'Mdama's Covenant was finally defeated. Meanwhile, a [[Guardian]] that had lain buried beneath the [[Csurdon Sea]] emerged and departed for [[Genesis]]. ===Sangheili-Jiralhanae war===
Simultaneously, the Sangheili would also continue to wage [[Sangheili-Jiralhanae war|war]] against the remaining [[San'Shyuum]] and the [[Jiralhanae]]. At first, the Sangheili were at a major disadvantage, as millennia of depending on the San'Shyuum for technology meant that the Sangheili were unable to properly repair or replace the ships they lost in battle. The odds began to even out when the San'Shyuum vanished and the Jiralhanae began to fall back into internecine conflicts.{{Ref/Anthology|Evo|Story=The Return}} The inability for the Jiralhanae to properly mine the resources on their colonies has also forced them to raid Sangheili worlds for their processed resources. In [[2558#March|March 2558]], the Swords of Sanghelios attempted peace talks with the [[Children of Oth Sonin]], represented by their lead, Jiralhanae chieftain [[Lydus]], on [[Ealen IV]]. Thel 'Vadam, with several Sangheili escorts, led the negotiations. [[Admiral]] [[Terrence Hood]] volunteered to moderate the talks between the two governments. However, the meeting was interrupted by a [[Battle of Ealen IV|surprise attack]] by [[Vata 'Gajat's mercenary group|mercenaries]] under the command of [[Shipmaster]] [[Vata 'Gajat]]. [[Captain (Navy)|Captain]] [[Thomas Lasky]], [[Sarah Palmer|Commander Sarah Palmer]], and the [[SPARTAN-IV Program|Spartan-IVs]] defended the delegation and evacuated them from the chamber.{{Ref/Reuse|HE1}} After various tribulations in getting the delegation to safety arose from the attack, the delegation and the surviving Spartans finally made it to safety aboard [[UNSC Infinity]]. Following the boarding of the Infinity, the [[United Nations Space Command|UNSC]] led the Sangheili and Jiralhanae fleets against the enemy fleet, forcing the Shipmaster to order a retreat. Due to Vata 'Gajat's attack, the negotiations were left in a standstill and little progress was made in furthering the peace between the Sangheili and the Jiralhanae.{{Ref/Comic|HE|Issue=3}}

With the Sangheili resisting the Created's rule, Cortana sent a Guardian and Forerunner soldiers to pacify Sanghelios, starting with its major cities.{{Ref/Novel|BadB|Chapter=1}} The UNSC reinforced the Swords of Sanghelios with its expeditionary forces, conducting joint patrols to monitor and defend the Sanghelios badlands from Created scouts and any remnant of [[Jul 'Mdama's Covenant]] still present on the planet.{{Ref/Reuse|CFDF}}

In 2559, 'Vadam would participate in the [[High Gathering]] where he would propose the [[Concert of Worlds]],{{Ref/Reuse|outchapt1}} as a means of unifying the Sangheili. As well, [[Oath Warden]] [[Crei 'Ayomuu]] would inform Thel 'Vadam of a potential [[Divine Hand|anti-Guardian weapon]] located on [[Netherop]].{{Ref/Reuse|outchapt2}} 'Vadam would call for aid from colonial allies and would personally [[Battle of Netherop (2559)|travel]] to the planet to begin a search for it.{{Ref/Novel|Id=outchapt4|Out|Chapter=4}}

===A renewed threat===
By [[2559#November|November 2559]], the ''[[Shadow of Intent]]'' had hunted down many of the ships of the [[San'Shyuum flotilla]] and brought the crews to justice.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=6}} However, a new threat arose in the form of [[Dovo Nesto]], a [[San'Shyuum]] [[High Lord]] and the near mythical leader of the [[Order of Restoration]] who sought to restore the [[Covenant]] empire, possessing the strategic acumen, connections and the history to make it happen unlike everyone else who had tried. Having manipulated [[War Chief]] [[Severan]] and [[Sali 'Nyon]] to his side, Nesto had significant support from both the [[Banished]] and [[Sali 'Nyon's Covenant]].{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET11|ET|Chapter=11}}{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=12}}{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=13}}

This led to a combined UNSC-Swords of Sanghelios task force working together to stop Nesto from excavating the [[Lithos]] on [[Boundary]] to seize control of the [[Domain]].{{Ref/Reuse|ET11}} In the midst of these events, [[Cortana]] met her end in the [[Battle for Zeta Halo]], leading to the deactivation of her [[Guardian Custode]]s.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=20}} Ultimately, the {{UNSCShip|Victory of Samothrace}} was forced to destroy the Lithos,{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=35}} causing significant casualties for both the Banished and the Covenant.{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET44|ET|Chapter=44}} However, while 'Nyon was killed by Severan after he realized that Nesto was using him,{{Ref/Novel|Id=ET40|ET|Chapter=40}} Swords of Sanghelios [[Blademaster]] [[Vul 'Soran]] betrayed his comrades.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=30}} 'Soran had been promised that the Sangheili would be restored to their former glory in the resurrected Covenant, believing that the Arbiter, the Swords of Sanghelios and the Banished were only a passing shadow while the Covenant stood unrivaled for millennia and would one day stand again with the Sangheili back in their rightful place.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=38}} As a result, 'Soran prevented Severan from killing Nesto, and helped Nesto to escape{{Ref/Reuse|ET40}} and take control of 'Nyon's forces to continue his efforts to rebuild the Covenant.{{Ref/Novel|ET|Chapter=47}}

The ''Shadow of Intent'' was subsequently deployed to search for Nesto with [[Gray Team]] being deployed alongside the assault carrier to help expedite the search.{{Ref/Reuse|ET44}}

===New conflicts===

With the Created severely weakened at the [[Battle for Zeta Halo]], remaining forces in the Urs system relinquished much of their control. This created a power vacuum in the system. Although, many keeps and kaidons on Sanghelios maintained their support for the Arbiter and Swords, other kaidons searched for different divisions of power. This allowed the [[Banished]] to move in to the system.{{Ref/Novel|Id=blood-moon|Halo: Battle for the Blood-Moon}}

Seeking to exploit the [[Kemuksuru]] on [[Suban]], the Banished had either taken over or created the [[Mines of Shua'ree]].{{Ref/Reuse|blood-moon}} The Swords of Sanghelios moved to support some local keeps in protecting high-value mining sites.{{Ref/Book|Enc22|Page=230}} This resulted in a [[Battle of Suban|confrontation]] between the Swords' [[Sanghelios home defense fleet]] and Banished forces stationed at and on the moon in [[2560#February|February 2560]].{{Ref/Reuse|blood-moon}}{{Ref/Map|HINF|Prism}}

On [[2560#March|March 3, 2560]], local Swords forces at Anvil Station, along with their UNSC allies, were [[Battle of Nysa|deployed]] to a distress call from [[Nysa]].{{Ref/Novel|Halo: Anvil Accord}} Several Riftborn from this contingent were deployed to the planet's surface, with at least [[Ovi 'Taar|one Sword casualty]]. A contingent of Swords of Sanghelios Sangheili was present on the {{UNSCShip|Infinity}} when it was ambushed above [[Installation 07|Zeta Halo]], and some of its members were amongst the survivors that made it to the ring's surface. On [[2560#February|February 2560]], one of them, a Sangheili simply known as [[Doc|"Doc"]], was captured by the Banished and brought to the [[House of Reckoning]], where he and [[Singh (Installation 07)|three]] [[Elena Bobrov|human]] [[Terry Hedge|survivors]] were forced to fight in one of the facility's arenas, ultimately ending with the four being overwhelmed and killed by Banished warriors.{{Ref/Novel|Id=tor|Halo: Trial of Reckoning}} In [[2560#June|June 2560]], four Swords of Sanghelios Sangheili -- [['Kor]], [['Rav]], [['Kita]] and [['Skaal]] -- rescued [[Fernando Esparza]] and his [[D77 Pelican|Pelican]] ''[[Echo 216]]'' from Banished forces,{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD27|EOD|Chapter=27}} later showing up with a stolen Banished Phantom with Esparza to rescue the Master Chief and [[Lucas Browning]] from the [[Silent Auditorium (location)|Silent Auditorium]] and finish off the remaining Banished forces present.{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD37|EOD|Chapter=37}} The next day, the four Sangheili were amongst the attendees at Browning's funeral at [[Lifeworker Central]].{{Ref/Novel|Id=EOD39|EOD|Chapter=39}} When large groups of UNSC survivors were detected, 'Kor told the Master Chief that the Swords of Sanghelios were with him.{{Ref/Novel|EOD|Chapter=42}}

The Jiralhanae have remained a thorn in the side of the Swords, with the [[Sangheili-Jiralhanae war]] continuing to rage on.{{Ref/Reuse|HE1}} Due to the wealth the Swords had amassed over the years following the Human-Covenant War, several Jiralhanae factions have marked them as the perfect target for raiding, leading to increased conflict.
