The '''self-destruct''', also referred to as a '''scuttling''' sometimes in ships, is the explosive self-destruction of an object or vessel.
==Overview==
In the [[UNSC]], the self-destruct is often an integrated mechanism present in starships and [[United Nations Space Command|UNSC]] [[military base]]s and is used to cause a massive explosion to completely destroy itself in order to prevent vital navigational data and strategically-valuable information from falling into enemy [[Covenant]] clutches, as per paragraph five of the [[Cole Protocol]]. Self-destructs can take the form of reactor overloads or, alternatively, an explosive device to be detonated, usually an [[octanitrocubane]] charge or a [[nuclear weapon]].

According to rumors, ONI installations would self-destruct if they couldn't confirm that the installation's authorized keeper was still alive.{{Ref/Reuse|env15}}

Self-destruct mechanisms are also employed by the [[Covenant]] and [[Covenant remnants|their remnants]] in their ships, [[Covenant citadel|citadels]] and [[Banished outpost|outposts]]. The Covenant were known to use a self-destruct to keep themselves from being captured in the event of a boarding action{{Ref/Reuse|ss3}}{{Ref/Reuse|ET6}} or as a method to get rid of boarders.{{Ref/Reuse|package}}

[[Forerunner]] installations employ self-destruct mechanisms as well. Following the [[Fate of Maethrillian]], [[Installation 07]],{{Ref/Novel|Id=pri273|Pri|Page=273}} then known as Gyre 11,{{Ref/Novel|Id=POL9|POL|Chapter=9}} retreated into a [[slipspace portal]], reappearing in a distant star system near the galaxy's edges.{{Ref/Reuse|pri273}} This was part of a security measure beyond [[Mendicant Bias]]' control—in order to prevent the ring from falling in the wrong hands, it had been programmed to enter a course which would result in a collision with [[Wolf-faced planet|a planet]] in several days.{{Ref/Reuse|pri279}} As the primary, automated control systems had been sabotaged,{{Ref/Novel|Id=p320|Pri|Page=320}} the [[Primordial]] and Mendicant Bias were unable to direct the Halo's movements. Instead, they began to gather humans in a last-ditch effort to use them to manually steer the ring away from its destructive course.

The humans on the ring were taken to the facility where Mendicant Bias' core was housed. There, humans from Earth were separated from the Tudejsa, and their ancestral personality imprints were removed by Mendicant Bias and the Primordial. They were given a choice to cooperate with Mendicant Bias and have their revenge against the Forerunners for [[Human-Forerunner wars|destroying their civilization]] ten thousand years earlier; however, they would first have to help save the Halo from colliding with the approaching planet. Those who accepted Bias' offer were sent to various control stations spread out across the Halo, including the [[Cartographer]].{{Ref/Reuse|p320}} However, humans alone did not possess the knowledge necessary to properly interface with the ring; instead, Flood-infected Forerunners processed by the [[Composer]] were brought in and connected with each human to the Halo's control systems.{{Ref/Novel|Pri|Page=328}} As Installation 07 approached the planet, the controllers successfully managed to reorient the ring in a way the planet would pass through the center; this way, the ring would take heavy damage but had a chance of surviving. Even with this guidance, the ring suffered catastrophic damage.

While the installation had already begun its passage, a fleet led by the [[IsoDidact]] appeared, and the Didact used his control codes to shut Mendicant Bias down. He immediately entered the Cartographer and connected to the installation's controls with [[Chakas]], while dreadnoughts from the Didact's fleet moved to provide power via connections across the ring. Despite the additional power supply, the Halo could not be saved in its entirety. In order to relieve the tidal stresses exerted on the Halo, the Didact ordered that the installation be reduced by discarding the most damaged plates. The ship was able to survive the crash mostly intact, and several key components were later salvaged by the [[Office of Naval Intelligence]]. These components were later swept for dangerous material and assigned for display at [[Outpost Discovery]]. However, ONI were not thorough in their check, and a Covenant [[AI]] was able to hide inside a section of the ship containing a maintenance deck. The AI was suppressed by [[Gabriela]], though it was able to initiate the corvette's self-destruct.
