Mabel

Mabel was a three-legged dog belonging to the fetcher Oliver Birch. She was a Golden Retriever, and was missing one of her hind legs. Birch found Mabel on the abandoned colony ship CAA Butterworth while on a fetching run in the debris field over the planet Dwarka and took her as a pet. Upon discovery, the animal was nervous and hungry, but curiously, the only thing alive on the ship.[1]
Mabel and Birch became stranded in space in a cryo chamber after they jettisoned out of Birch's ship, Galileo's Worst Enemy, as it was ripped apart by the stresses of slipstream space.[1]
Around April 9, 2557, Birch and Mabel were rescued by the UEG Cartographic Corps Huygens-class survey ship Anjin. Their cryo chamber randomly collided with the ship and it was recovered by a researcher who went to investigate. Although the crew were interested in the story behind Birch and Mabel's predicament, the cryo chamber was damaged in the collision, meaning the Anjin crew couldn't risk opening it themselves. They needed to take it to professionals who could safely repair the chamber so that the man and his dog could be revived. As such, the crew planned to finish off their last assigned system scan and return to Earth.[2]
