Marvin Mobuto was a UNSC Marine non-commissioned officer and one of the Reclaimers during the Flood outbreak on Installation 04.

Biography

Human-Covenant War

Marvin spent his whole adult life fighting the Covenant and countless Covenant soldiers had fallen to him.

Marvin was married to Maggie and the couple never had any children because they couldn't face bringing someone into the world to confront such trauma and loss and the ongoing horrors of the war.

On the few brief occasions that he was back on Reach for some recovery leave, Marvin enjoyed visiting a library containing real books. Marvin befriended the old librarian who, on Marvin's last leave before the planet was glassed, showed Marvin his personal collection of genuine old tomes from centuries before. Marvin enjoyed A Soldier's Tale: Rainforest Wars and the Outbound series. The last book that Marvin received was Stephen King's The Stand, but he never had time to read the book despite the librarian offering him the use of the man's own private rooms.

Fall of Reach

On August 30, 2552, during the Fall of Reach, Marvin received a final transmission from his wife Maggie that she was safe in Veszprém running the space elevator up and down. Maggie told her husband to worry about himself, keep safe, stay well and come back to her. However, a Covenant infiltration unit attacked the head of the space elevator which was heavily defended by Marines and a team of Spartan supersoldiers.

When it started to look like things weren't going to end well, Marvin's platoon was sent to Lambda Station to initiate the Cole Protocol. While some of the squads sent to initiate the Cole Protocol were lucky enough to have Spartans from Gauntlet Team with them, all Marvin had was forty Marines in two old Mako-class corvettes. Aware of the attack on the space elevator, Marvin went into the mission distracted by concerns for his wife's fate. One Mako was destroyed before they even docked when debris from a destroyed Covenant ship pierced its hull and damaged the drive with the other transport only just getting away before it exploded. Marvin's platoon succeeded in their mission, but by then the station was overrun. The Marines managed to wipe the Covenant out and reach their ship, but only Marvin and two others made it back. The Mako's engines failed and they were left adrift until the UNSC Pillar of Autumn picked them up while executing a Class-L flash-dock procedure. By then, the other two Marines had died of their injuries, leaving Marvin as the sole survivor of his platoon.

After being rescued, Marvin learned the horrible fate of his wife and the others at the space elevator. Covenant troops had fought their way onto the orbital station, killing everyone in their path at a great cost to themselves. Two hundred Marines had died defending the station from almost a thousand Covenant and a new enemy troop marched over their own dead and used the elevator to fight their way down to the surface. There, the Covenant had gathered all of the elevator's surface defenders and maintenance crews, marshalled them into a warehouse filled with military hardware destined for orbiting transport ships and burned the place. Marvin was haunted by his wife's death and was left filled with rage and a need for revenge against the Covenant. Marvin was convinced that Maggie had screamed as she died because she believed him to be dead too.

Marvin was present during the Pillar of Autumn when it made a slipspace jump to escape from Reach and arrived at Installation 04.

On September 19, he was listed as the NCO in charge of Marine Security Detail C on Charlie Shift on Pillar of Autumn's duty roster.

During the the defense of the Autumn over Halo, Marvin was a part of a fireteam that accompanied the Master Chief in defending the ship for awhile. Together, they took out the Covenant boarding parties that were using the Autumn's own lifeboat airlocks to get in. Marvin was then sent with Corporal Paxton and a few others to prep and guard the Helljumpers' HEVs. However, the Covenant had broken through the UNSC's defenses by then and a detachment attacked Marvin and the Marines with him. The Marines managed to take care of most of them, but a Kig-Yar initiated the countdown on a chain of charges that the Covenant had been setting across the Autumn's belly. Marvin, Paxton and two others managed to make it into the pods and were blown clear of the ship by the explosion. Marvin and Paxton landed safely and close to each other, but a third pod had a hard landing, killing the occupant. The fourth collided with Lifeboat D13, causing it to crash.

Following the Flood outbreak on the ring, Marvin was wandering in a structure on the ring alongside several prisoners from Lifeboat D13 and Seelior 'Andolee, when he was found by 343 Guilty Spark following an encounter with the parasite, who used Halo's teleportation grid to transport him to the Library. Instructed to retrieve the activation index, Marvin fought valiantly through hordes of Flood, including pod infectors, attacker forms and swarm forms. During his journey, Marvin would come to learn of Halo's true purpose, coming to the conclusion that he should activate the installation since it was only a matter of time before the Covenant drove humanity to extinction. However, wearing only the standard, UNSC-issued ballistic body armor as protection (which 343 Guilty Spark referred to as "less suitable"), Marvin eventually succumbed to the Flood. He broke his arm and his helmet eyepiece was shattered, the shrapnel piercing his eye. As he was succumbing to the infection, Marvin held an M9 fragmentation grenade to his chest, his last thoughts being of his wife Maggie. His body was completely thrashed and mangled to the point where even the Flood infection forms could not make use of it.

John-117 would later find Mobuto's body in the Library during his mission to collect the Index. John identified Marvin through his dog tag and paid his respects to the marine. He was surprised at how far Marvin had managed to get, as he himself had been pushed to the limit to get as far as he had even with his SPARTAN-II augmentations and MJOLNIR armor.

Production notes

Marvin Mobuto made his brief debut in the Halo: Combat Evolved's novel adaptation Halo: The Flood, with his appearance being based on one of the dead human attacker forms found on the third floor in the campaign level The Library. In the Halo: Campaign Evolved iteration of The Library, Mobuto's corpse can be found on the level, with some dialogue by Guilty Spark adapted from The Flood. Mobuto's body is next to that level's Terminal.

Mobuto takes on a central role in the novel Halo: Parasite's Wake.
