The Assault Rifle is a weapon featured in Halo 4.
Universe and lore[edit]
- Main article: MA5D assault rifle
In Halo 4, the Assault Rifle featured is the MA5D assault rifle; a 7.62x51mm rifle in the MA5 series utilised by the United Nations Space Command. It is the successor to the MA5B and MA5C models featured in prior games.[2]
Gameplay[edit]
Counterparts[edit]
Campaign and Spartan Ops[edit]
The Assault Rifle is one of the most common weapons in Halo 4's campaign. It serves as a starting weapon in every mission barring Midnight, being a well-rounded automatic utility weapon that is well-suited to deal with most encounters at short to medium range. The weapon's fire rate and damage allows it to stagger enemies like Grunts and Jackals, allowing for easier kills, while chipping through Elite shields quickly; Sangheili Commanders are able to be eliminated in less than a magazine's worth of ammunition even on Legendary, for example.
Within most of Spartan Ops, loadouts from multiplayer are able to be utilized, allowing players to spawn with the Assault Rifle by default over needing to find it, although it functions identically otherwise. The Assault Rifle wasn't subject to the Weapon Tuning Update in Halo 4's campaign or Spartan Ops, thus, it features reduced damage albeit with a longer auto-aim and magnetism range. Like other weapons that can be customized, the Assault Rifle is able to use multiplayer skins in both campaign and Spartan Ops, although the former option is only available through Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
Multiplayer[edit]
Unlike any other primary weapon within Halo 4's multiplayer component on the Xbox 360, the Assault Rifle is available by default as soon as the player is able to customize their loadout, requiring no purchase through Spartan Points. The same is said for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, where the weapon is the default for all loadouts. The Assault Rifle is also the secondary starting weapon for Legendary gametypes alongside the Battle Rifle; it serves as a default weapon within certain loadouts in the ranked playlists present in The Master Chief Collection.
Functioning similarly to the Assault Rifle of Reach, Halo 4's variant of the weapon features a higher consistent damage output and a defined buff to its ranged ability through its tightened bloom; these traits, along with low amounts of recoil allow the Assault Rifle to engage at much further ranges than before. Featuring no scoped capabilities, the Assault Rifle's red reticle range extends to approximately 24 meters, just over half the range of Halo 4's default motion tracker range. While these traits make the Assault Rifle the most consistent of the automatic weapons within Halo 4, it possesses the slowest killtime of the three, and is able to take down a player's shields in 8 rounds, killing in 5 more; 6 rounds and a melee will kill an enemy without an Overshield, while an enemy with a full Overshield will be able to take 26 rounds before it's fully removed. Pairing the Assault Rifle with a Damage Boost will cut its killtimes in half, with 4 rounds removing shields, 3 finishing the opponent, and 12 burning through an Overshield alone.
Running the Assault Rifle with a Speed Boost or the Dexterity support upgrade will shift its base reload from approximately 1.7 seconds to 1 second flat, and while its reload is longer if the entire magazine is expended, this extended animation can be cancelled by quickly swapping weapons.
The Assault Rifle also has a commendation for players to progress through in multiplayer, featuring seven tiers that require a cumulative 1,935 kills with the weapon to complete. Completing this commendation rewards XP per tier, and maxing this out along with all other UNSC loadout-specific commendations will ultimately reward the player with the PROTECTOR armor and the "Projectile" emblem.
Changes from Halo 4 to Weapon Tuning Update[edit]
- Damage increased to 120%, the Assault Rifle now kills in three less rounds.
- Max spread decreased from 2.4 to 2 degrees.
- Auto-aim angle decreased from 5 to 3 degrees.
- Magnetism angle decreased from 10 to 7 degrees.[3]
Skins[edit]
- Main article: Weapon skins (Halo 4)
The Assault Rifle featured several skins that could be unlocked and utilized in Halo 4's Spartan Ops and multiplayer suite, with more being added in DLC packs released in 2013, and another being exclusive to a figure launched within McFarlane's second series of Halo 4-themed action figures. Upon Halo: The Master Chief Collection's launch in 2014, only the base series of skins for the Assault Rifle were available, with both the DLC skins and entirely new skins being added during Series 4: Reclaimer and Series 7: Elite in 2020 and 2021.
