I am the dreamer. That is what she tells me.[1]

The "dreamer" is a researcher working for the Office of Naval Intelligence (possibly ONI's Section Four), under Project ARC DREAM. While their real name is unknown, "dreamer" is a title assigned to them by the geas of an ancient human (or "Ancestor") during the dreamer's explorations of a derelict cruiser found drifting through space. While aboard the cruiser, the dreamer found themselves drawn towards some of the ancient human mouthpieces recovered from the ship, which allowed them to commune with the ancient human, who in turn guided the dreamer through visions of the ship's history through the Human-Forerunner wars and Forerunner-Flood war.[1]

Biography[edit]

In April 2560, the individual known as the dreamer was one of the researchers working on Project ARC DREAM for ONI: the investigation of a derelict Ancestor cruiser found drifting through space. While aboard the ship, the ARC DREAM crew found themselves being affected by the ship and manifesting strange visions and mental effects. For the dreamer, this displayed in the form of beginning to communicate with the essence of the cruiser's ancient human commanding officer. The Ancestor began by talking to the dreamer and convincing them to stay on the ship even after the end of their shift; they hid aboard until safely alone, until eventually they had the ship to themselves. Thanks to the Ancestor's influence, the dreamer was able to access bulkheads aboard the ship that had otherwise remained sealed, drawing them further into the ship. While aboard, the dreamer noted that the longer they remained on the ship, the stronger the Ancestor's influence felt, remarking that they did not know whether they were dreaming the Ancestor or vice versa.[1]

Eventually the dreamer was directed to equip one of the Project ENOCH mouthpieces developed by ONI's Watershed Division. They allowed the dreamer to communicate more directly as the Ancestors did long ago, able to understand a strange language of clicks and whistles while simultaneously not understanding any of it. By equipping the ENOCH mouthpiece, the Ancestor was then able to speak "through" the dreamer, and able to more directly guide them through the ship. While travelling, the dreamer began to experience shared visions from the Ancestor's history; these included:[1]

Eventually the dreamer arrived at the ship's bridge, at which point they were able to intuitively interpret how to operate the machinery there. This concluded with the realisation, for the dreamer, that ancient humanity's empire had not been completely wiped out by the Forerunners; holdouts were able to survive untouched by the Ecumene, particularly in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way. Finally, the Ancestor imparted onto the dreamer ancient humanity's guiding philosophy of daowa-maadthu.[1]

Of all of the ARC DREAM researchers working aboard the derelict cruiser, the dreamer has thus-far been the only one to manifest the essence of an actual ancient human.[1]
