"Captain? Sarge? Can you hear me? We’ve got contact! Lots of them! But they’re not Covenant! They’re just tearing through us! What the...?!! ...no!!!"
— Corporal Lovik’s distress call to SSgt Johnson

Corporal Lovik was a UNSC Marine corporal attached to the UNSC Pillar of Autumn in 2552.

Biography

When the Pillar of Autumn arrived at Threshold and crashed onto Installation 04, Lovik abandoned the ship and landed on Halo with the rest of the jumped crew. He then joined the rest of the survivors at the UNSC makeshift Alpha Base.

Corporal Lovik was a Marine NCO in the UNSC, and had been picked by Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson to lead the second squad in a recon mission on a believed Covenant base that included Privates Riley, Manuel Mendoza, Kappus, Bisenti, Private First Class Wallace Jenkins, and Johnson.[1]

Unknown to the group, they were actually heading to a Flood containment facility, where the Covenant had already accidentally released the Flood. Lovik was among the first group of humans attacked by the Flood, and desperately raised Johnson and Captain Jacob Keyes over radio, though incoherently. [2]

Lovik and his men had then been attacked by a group of Flood, and made it to back to the surface and took refuge in a structure. Based on his transmission to Johnson, it was likely he had been attacked by a Pod infector, and had either torn it off, or another Marine helped him. They were eventually joined by a few escaped survivors of the first squad, including Private Bisenti and Chips Dubbo.

"Sir, thank God you're here! We've been lost out here for hours. After we lost contact with the rest of the mission, we headed for the RV point, and then these... these things! ...they ambushed us! We've gotta get out of here!"
— A frightened and confused Corporal Lovik reports to the Master Chief

When the John-117 arrived at their position, Lovik and the remaining members of his squad followed him to a large tower where Carol Rawley was extracting them. Fighting through waves of Flood, it is unknown whether Lovik was turned into a Flood combat form, or was picked up by Echo 419, but his death was confirmed when John-117 detonated the Pillar of Autumn's fusion reactors.[3]

Production notes

  • During the Halo: Combat Evolved cutscene in which he contacted Johnson and Keyes, Lovik was voiced by Bungie employee Chris Carney.[4] Near the end of the level, however, Lovik's voice was the same as that of Chips Dubbo (voiced by Australian voice actor Andrew McKaige). This discrepancy is due to William C. Dietz allocating Dubbo's line to Lovik in Halo: The Flood.
