In the early years of humanity's interplanetary colonization, it was mainly commercial interests that propelled outward expansion into the Solar system, the colonization programs initiated by Earth's national governments being far less ambitious and efficient. Free of the restrictions of international law, many corporations operating in the colonies (particularly those on [[Mars]]) conducted extensive research and development into biotechnology and [[nanotechnology]]. IN [[2162]], following the Jovian Moons Campaign, Frieden and UN forces, as well as those of the [[Communism|neo-communist]] [[Koslovics|Koslovic movement]], prepared for an engagement in [[South America]], one of the most fertile and economically promising regions of Earth. In an apparent attempt to gain material goods from industries in South America, the two military juntas attacked both each other and the UN troops scrambling to defend home territory, culminating in what would become known as the Rainforest Wars.{{Ref/Reuse|xbox}}

The conflict in South America resulted in a enormous casualties, especially among the infantry of all three sides, due to difficult conditions among the continent's numerous mountain ranges and rainforests, as well as wildlife and volatile weather. The Rainforest Wars also led to international famine, leading many to believe the UN was no longer acting solely as a military defense force in the face of political extremists, but also as a primary provider of starvation relief.{{Ref/Reuse|xbox}}
