Class

Yet again I have found that an article relating to this vessel (this time "Battle of Chi Ceti IV") has been altered to suggest that its class has been confirmed. In the past two years it has changed from "frigate" to "corvette" to "stealth corvette" to "light cruiser"; I would like to point out that Halo: The Fall of Reach (or at least pre-2010 editions) say that this ship is a third the length of the UNSC Commonwealth. While the editors claiming it to the a light cruiser have given a citation from the encyclopedia, the page does not state the class of Unrelenting, simply calling it a "Covenant ship". The section on notable Covenant vessels doesn't even make mention of the Unrelenting, leaving even fewer places for a source to be found. Finally, the section on Covenant ship classes states that the Covenant light frigate is some 300 meters long; 300 is of course not a third of 478, the approximate length of Commonwealth based on a later, similar-built frigate.

The only facts we know about this ship are:

1. Its length in relation to the Commonwealth;
2. Its crew seemingly being primarily of Kig-yar origin (they make it to engineering and not one Sangheili is sent in to stop the boarding party; strange, eh?).

It is probably a Missionary ship as in Mortal Dictata it is stated that these were the only type of ship that the Covenant permitted the Kig Yar to command. The size and crew fit this. VARGR (talk) 01:00, 14 February 2014 (EST)

Frank actually says " So you’ll see a few differences, choices of Covenant ship, weapons and so on, but it adheres tightly to the core canon, with a few flourishes here and there to fill in gaps or smooth over previous errors." I think he is addressing the differences but reassuring people that the main story will be as true to the original work as they could make it. Long Time Coming

Bit of a long shot in the dark here, but wouldn't a DAS-class storm cutter fit the bill more nicely? With the little info we have to go off of, we know that the size of the Unrelenting has to be 1/3rd the size of the UNSC Commonwealth. The Paris-class, being 535.05 meters in length, dividing by 3 gets up 178.35 meters. With the CRS being 300 meters, the Commonwealth is 1.7835 times the size of the CRS-class light cruiser. By comparison, with the introduction of the storm cutter in Halo: Warfleet, we have a vessel that comes in at 225 meters in length. This sits much closer to that original figure of 178.35 meters. CRS-class confirmed?

So, um... Is Unrelenting a CRS-class light cruiser, finally ? Everything seems so perfect, I can't think of Stephen Loftus making that up. If he may confirm/deny/explain his choice, it would be much appreciated. (The size doesn't seem to match up, though. Would the comic book really supersede the novel's description?) I see the page has been updated, now. Not sure if it should be the case, since its description and size don't match up with the CRS light cruiser. This is the same reason for which we don't consider the Ascendant Justice to be a CSO or CAS carrier, since it doesn't match up with any of these classes, despite its similar physical appearance. I'd prefer to hear Loftus's explanation first, perhaps he could confirm 343i's stance on this issue. At best it would mean that the ship has been retconned into a CRS light cruiser. Or perhaps someone could ask Catalog what the ship's classification is. I dare not, though. The Fall of Reach comic series isn't fully canonical. I think the light cruiser on the HBO scale charts was referenced as Unrelenting because it's the only named ship that has ever been depicted as part of the CRS class, canonically or not. I was invited to pipe in by Jugus. I've uploaded a render I did when we were working out details in the original Visual Guide for Covenant ships. I rendered a Charon-class (as depicted in the comic, even though the Commonwealth is correctly a Paris-class) in relation to a CRS-class 300m cruiser to the approximate angle seen in the comic. I've included it here to the right. It was done to establish the cruiser in the comic could not be as large as a CCS-class or equivalent and in fact was more likely a CRS-class even though it varies from the text in the novel. I assume the comic artist wasn't given the relevant info. This render comes from May, 2011. We'd established the Unrelenting was a CRS-class during these discussions. That's the stance as of now, but 343i is fully within their rights to change it if they see fit. I'm aware my own work is just that, my own, and cannot be sourced as "official" in the same sense you would cite a novel page or a game level. So do with this as you will, but my scale chart CRS cruiser will remain Unrelenting based on what I know. -ScaleMaster117 (talk) 21:57, 9 July 2014 (EDT)

Unrelenting and Commonwealth

I always thought the Unrelenting was a Kig-Yar missionary ship. The Unrelenting seemed to be only crewed by Kig-Yar and it seems to be of similar size. Perhaps it is another Kig-Yar-controlled ship class, like the raider. - NightHammer (talk) 00:57, 10 July 2014 (EDT)

We've known Brute-crewed cruisers as well and they use standard Covenant materiel, so it's feasible not all Jackal-crewed ships are strictly their own types. But keep in mind that when humans were expected, the Covenant seemed to send Jackals and Grunts against them. When the novels were originally written, the Elites were only seen late into the war and generally did not interact with 'vermin' like humans until the Spartans started to become an issue for the Covenant. So since the Elites' behavior and outlook in Covenant society changed somewhat, we may have to accept the retcon of a CRS cruiser in the comic. -ScaleMaster117 (talk) 10:38, 10 July 2014 (EDT)
