Sword Flying is a glitch present in Halo 2. It allows players to use the Energy Sword to bypass invisible walls. The glitch can also be performed in Halo 3, though not with the same results.

The player can leave the ordinary map boundaries by performing a Sword Fly trick or Sword Cancel. Also a form of Sword flying is Butterflying and is done by standing below a partner and sword cancel continuously while the partner continuously jumps. The player will charge at but not slash the other player, allowing the sword user to fly over the other person and get over a boundary. Players could also use the "sword fly trick" to get past the boundaries in older versions, although this glitch has been removed from the game by an update from the game publisher, Bungie.

*For those using boxer control, use Left Trigger instead of B.
Sword canceling is the act of sword-lunging at a person without hitting them. The method works by pressing R+X; this minor button combo performs, and then quickly cancels, a sword swing. B+X may also be used; it works especially well for #Wall climbing.
*It can be used in Halo 3 as well, but not with the same affect as Halo 2.

Sword canceling can be used to sword fly by positioning one player (Person A) in the position the other player (Person B) wishes to reach. Person B should have an empty Rocket Launcher and an Energy Sword. Person A should jump repeatedly; Person B should repeatedly sword cancel at Person A; they will eventually pass through the invisible wall and reach A<nowiki/>'s location.

Walkthrough
Partner bouncing
The first, sword canceling, is the act of lunging at a person without hitting them, by hitting R + X, effectively canceling your attack. Another form of canceling is B + X, which is useful for wall climbing (see below)
Another use for sword canceling is partner bouncing: the usage of sword canceling to propel two players upward.

The sword fly trick works by having one player already in the position the other player wishes to reach. While jumping, the player wanting to reach the position must have a rocket launcher with no ammunition and a sword. While targeting the jumping man, from the bottom of the cross-hair, the player must switch between the rocket and sword to obtain access to the new area. Two players can still use the "sword cancel" to gain access to new areas, or a technique called 'butterflying,' in which one player locks on with the sword by pressing "r" then quickly hitting "x." With proper timing in Halo 2, one could do a 'super' sword cancel by hitting A, at the right time, though, depending on who you go to about this, it may not even exist to them.
One player (Person A) should jump on top of another player (Person B). Person B should have an Energy Sword out, and should look at and aim at Person A. Person A should jump into the air, and Person B should sword cancel (using B+X) at them; when Person B reaches Person A, A should then jump off of their head, at which point B should sword cancel again...

Partner Bounce
The process may be repeated to reach higher and higher locations; provided that both players' lateral positions remain unchanged (such that Person A remains exactly above Person B), the trick may be repeated almost endlessly. It cannot be used to bypass invisible ceilings, however.
Another way to do this is by pressing the "B" and "X" buttons simultaneously with the index and middle fingers, jumping upon the other player's head and jumping again. The glitch can be done more quickly by adding "a" into the button combo. The player doing the canceling is propelled up to the first, who jumps again. This method of play can be used to attain incredible heights, as long as the first person maintains his position on top of the others head. Invisible walls on most levels stop the players from traveling 'out of the map,' but it can still lead to unfair play in objective games on maps such as Relic. You may also press Y and A at the same time. This does the same thing but it is much easier because you only have to use one finger. But be warned you may kill your partner by hitting them in the back

Rocket Canceling
Pressing B+X requires that a player use their index and middle fingers. Some players prefer to use Y+A, which is easier but more dangerous to Person A if a mistake is used -- it may result in Person A being hit in the back and killed.

There are a few methods of Flying with your Energy Sword and Rocket Launcher:
The Energy Sword and Rocket Launcher can be used in combination to rocket cancel, allowing players to fly through the air.

*One variation of this is to have no ammo in your Rocket Launcher and tap Y and in the middle of switching from Rockets to Sword hit R, you should "fly" to wherever your cross hair is pointed, moreover wherever you want to go.
*One "rocket canceling" method is to have an empty Rocket Launcher as a primary weapon. he player should tap Y to switch weapons, and in the middle of switching weapons, press R. The player should then "fly" to wherever their reticule was pointned.
*The other form, sometimes called rocket jumping or sword flying, is when you have both a Rocket Launcher and a sword, in either hand. First switch to the Rocket Launcher, then aim at a target so the cross hair turns red. Then quickly press X + Y + Right Trigger repeatedly until you "fly" at the target. This is useful for getting to otherwise unreachable places high on maps, like Zanzibar and Headlong
*The other form, sometimes called "rocket jumping", is when a player uses a full Rocket Launcher to aim at a target, so that their reticule turns red. The player then quickly presses X+Y+R repeatedly until they "fly" at the target. This is useful for getting to otherwise unreachably-high places on maps, like Zanzibar and Headlong.

In also another recent update in Halo 3, you can't do it, only on Halo 2 the glitch is still active, so check it out on Halo 2 or Halo CE ONLY!
Rocket canceling does not work in Halo 3.

Rocket Launcher Jump
Another notable glitch involves the Rocket Launcher, an Overshield, and a Battle Rifle. This is done on the new map Relic. First of all, move one of the two tall blast shields found near the crashed transport vehicle, to beside the main structure. This is most easily done with a warthog. It is easiest if the shield faces away from the structure, and is about 20 feet away. Stand on the T-brace that supports the shield against the ground and shoot the top of the shield with the Rocket Launcher. This will kill you if you do not have an Overshield. Theoretically, a teammate could shoot the shield if Friendly Fire was off. If done correctly, you will be launched very high into the air, and you can land on top of the structure if your aim is good.
Note: You must be connection host to do this glitch. It is recommended that you bring a sniper rifle or the Oddball up with you, as you are essentially invincible. (This can also be performed using an upturned Banshee.)

There are four ways to glitch involving the Energy Sword. In this article, 'R' is short and for the right trigger on your controller. 'X', 'Y', 'B' are the blue, yellow, and red buttons respectively.

Sword canceling

Sword canceling is the act of sword-lunging at a person without hitting them. The method works by pressing R+X; this minor button combo performs, and then quickly cancels, a sword swing. B+X may also be used; it works especially well for #Wall climbing.

Sword canceling can be used to sword fly by positioning one player (Person A) in the position the other player (Person B) wishes to reach. Person B should have an empty Rocket Launcher and an Energy Sword. Person A should jump repeatedly; Person B should repeatedly sword cancel at Person A; they will eventually pass through the invisible wall and reach A's location.

Partner bouncing

Another use for sword canceling is partner bouncing: the usage of sword canceling to propel two players upward.

The process may be repeated to reach higher and higher locations; provided that both players' lateral positions remain unchanged (such that Person A remains exactly above Person B), the trick may be repeated almost endlessly. It cannot be used to bypass invisible ceilings, however.

Pressing B+X requires that a player use their index and middle fingers. Some players prefer to use Y+A, which is easier but more dangerous to Person A if a mistake is used -- it may result in Person A being hit in the back and killed.

The Energy Sword and Rocket Launcher can be used in combination to rocket cancel, allowing players to fly through the air.

 • One "rocket canceling" method is to have an empty Rocket Launcher as a primary weapon. he player should tap Y to switch weapons, and in the middle of switching weapons, press R. The player should then "fly" to wherever their reticule was pointned.
 • The other form, sometimes called "rocket jumping", is when a player uses a full Rocket Launcher to aim at a target, so that their reticule turns red. The player then quickly presses X+Y+R repeatedly until they "fly" at the target. This is useful for getting to otherwise unreachably-high places on maps, like Zanzibar and Headlong.

To get to really high places, you can use a combination of Sword Flying and at the top of the flight, using the Sword Cancel on an opponent to get to where they are

In recent auto updates, Sword Flying has been changed drastically on Xbox Live. Instead of pressing Y, press Y, X, and B at the same time in place. It is much more difficult and will only lunge at other with certain angles. Sword lunging still works. Sword Cancels have not been disabled due to the auto-update

Rocket canceling does not work in Halo 3.

Sword Climbing

The third form of sword glitching is the sword climb, also known as butterflying. To sword climb, you need two people willing to work together. They should stand right next to each other and look at each other. Then, at the same time, they should both hit X+A+B repeatedly. The method can allow them to climb through the air.
